The work was directed by Meritorious Artist Dang Thai Huyen, with a script written by writer Chu Lai. Among the cast, Do Nhat Hoang plays the main role as a soldier of the 1st Sub- Teams of the Liberation Army. Before the milestone role in his career, actor Nhat Hoang had a special sharing with Lao Dong Newspaper reporter.
In the film "Red Rain", Do Nhat Hoang plays the main role. This is definitely the most meaningful role of your career. What have you prepared for this transformation?
- truly, "Red Rain" is a very special milestone in my career. To transform into this role, the most difficult thing for me was to learn to speak the Northern voice. I was born in Nha Trang, live in Ho Chi Minh City, so to have the right dialogue and maintain emotions is a big challenge. The second difficulty is physical problems. I used to be a dancer, so my body is still used to the intensity of practice. This helps me keep up with the strict military exercises to prepare for the role. And most importantly, prepare mentally to "sign up" with the film crew.
For Nhat Hoang, what is the most difficult thing for you, fighting with military equipment, or depicting the emotions of soldiers in the face of a country in danger?
- For me, everything on set is difficult, but the most difficult thing is still touching the soul of a soldier. People living in peacetime like me cannot naturally fully understand the harshness of war - when their eyes are always tense, watching every fluctuation around them; the way they cherish each bowl of rice like that is their last meal and above all, the unusual peace when facing death. They have chosen to put the Fatherland above all their lives.
To find that feeling, I listened to the stories of veterans for hours, read each page of memories and tried to put myself in their position - imagine what I would think if tomorrow were no longer there, what I would send. Every moment standing in front of the camera, I remind myself: This is not just a role, but also a gratitude to those who sacrificed so that I can live in peace today.
During war, camaraderie is a deep and strong connection. How did Do Nhat Hoang and his co-stars nurture and build a team-force and comrade relationship?
- On the set of "Red Rain", my brothers and I lived together in true sense. Every day, not only working together, but also spending time discussing life and work, sharing the smallest things with each other. A piece of food, a sleep, or just a few short stories at rest. Those seemingly simple things fuel affection, so that people gradually become true brothers.
I am grateful that Red Rain gave me the opportunity to experience that connection, a feeling that perhaps only those who have lived and fought together can truly understand.
Many actors shared that acting in war films makes them haunted by the scene of their teammates sacrificing. For Do Nhat Hoang, what scenes will make you remember them forever in the movie "Red Rain"?
- I am haunted by loss a lot. The brothers have been together since the early days, sharing every meal, sleep, every story, so when someone is no longer present on set, I feel an empty space and miss them so much. The scene that haunted me the most was near the end of the film, when the character had to face the sacrifice of his teammates.
At that moment, I cried a lot. Not because of the demanding script, but because I really miss my teammates, really feel the space they leave. At that time, I kept thinking about the days together in the rain, eating quick in the sun, laughing between tiring practice hours... When the director shouted "cut", I still couldn't get out immediately, still haunted by that feeling of loss for many days. That is my tear, not just the character's.
Actor Do Nhat Hoang started out as a dancer, and starred in the movie "Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story". Do you seem to have a good fate with a film adapted from the works of the writers?
- I also feel that I have a fate with adapted films. I don't know if it's because my face seems a little "old". Actually, I think this fate comes from being passionate about stories that have been cherished by the author with each word.
When adapted into a film, that story was given a new life. I was lucky to be on that journey, so I always felt both nervous and pressured.
As an amateur actor, Do Nhat Hoang has had 2 main roles. With initial successes, in your opinion, what percentage of luck is there?
- I think luck accounts for the majority.I am lucky to have a professional team, lucky to have valuable opportunities, lucky to have met great colleagues...But if I am lucky but do not try, I will not be able to go far.I really love this job and want to give my all.
