Step out of your comfort zone to play an evil role
usual playing the role of a gentle father, this time the role of a father-in-law in The standard of selling bridesmaids is too sinister. Is this considered a breakthrough out of his comfort zone?
- This is a new challenge for me. In terms of character, this is a new, more special experience, different from the old experiences that every actor wants to experience to see how much strength they have, whether they can perform well or not.
The second is about the film genre. This is considered a horror film that I have never participated in in this genre, so I also want to try it. Of course, when participating, I have to adjust my acting better with this film genre. I believe that any actor wants to experience many different genres and characters.
How did you change yourself to best suit this role?
- The biggest change when taking on this role is the way the character is portrayed. For example, when playing an evil role, many people think that just looking at their appearance can exude fierceness. But for me, that was not enough. Before, I often played gentle roles, so the audience sometimes didn't believe I could "act".
In fact, I do not want to act in a simple "nhau" style, but want to exploit the psychological depth so that viewers can recognize the transformation and inhumanship of the character - that is even heavier than the word "nhau". I always find a way out of the dead end. In the past, when playing the role of black society in The Judge, I did not choose the tunnel-like, tattooed style, but acted with a low voice, creating weight. With this role as well, I want the audience to feel fear from the character's inner self, not just from appearance.
It is known that on the set of "The Dream of Selling Brides", he proactively created distance from young actors because the character of the father in the film is a very distant person?
- In the role of a powerful father, a father-son and daughter-in-law who are both afraid, I proactively keep my distance from young actors. There were even friends who had acted in films with me before, but I only greeted them through the loudspeaker, not chatting much. The purpose is to make you feel the coldness, intimacy, true to the character's personality.
Happiness to see your child have a passion
In the film, he plays the role of a father with different personalities. So in real life, are you a gentle or strict father?
- Like in that film, sometimes fierce, sometimes gentle and in fact I myself too. In real life, I was sometimes very hot-tempered. Many people thought I was gentle like Mr. Son in "come home, my child", but in fact I was not.
In the family, is he or his wife the one who takes care of the children more?
- In the past, because of stage work, I traveled all year round, sometimes I had to be away from home for 4 months, which was a small thing. Therefore, the management and education of the children is mainly carried out by his wife.
Do you regret that you are so passionate about stage and art but your children do not follow the profession?
- I have no regrets at all, on the contrary, I am happy. Not because of economic reasons or fear of having to work hard - because no job is without difficulties. What makes me feel secure is that I can do the job I love. That is the important thing. Only when children are not passionate and do not want to do anything is there a need to worry. Seeing my child passionate about the job, I was really happy.
It is known that his eldest son had studied abroad in Finland and had graduated, while his youngest daughter is studying for a doctorate in the US. Is the children's academic achievements the thing that makes you feel most proud of?
- When children grow up, every parent feels proud. As for which path the children choose to pursue, it is entirely up to them to decide. Parents can only give a few suggestions, never imposing or orienting instead. As for my youngest daughter, she was a bit influenced by her brother, because he studied Chemistry at Amsterdam (Hanoi), so he also wanted to try his hand in that direction.
Do you think your youngest daughter will stay abroad in the future?
- It is entirely up to you to decide whether you will stay abroad to work or not in the future. If you like it, stay, if not, go back. I have never intended to impose or force it to be this or that. No matter what choice is made, as long as the child finds it suitable, parents should respect it. Of course, if my child stays and works away from home, I can't help but worry and love him more.
