Game show returns with many difficulties
Once dominating prime time, entertainment game shows seem to have lost their position and are no longer hot enough to attract audiences like before.
A series of programs that once exploded on television such as The Voice, Vietnam Idol, Dancing with the Stars..., however, after many seasons on air, these programs no longer maintained their appeal and had to be postponed for many years.
These game shows, when they returned, could not retain the audience like “Vietnam Idol”. The show returned in 2023 and found the champion, Ha An Huy. It is worth noting that Ha An Huy was also the champion of Big Song Big Deal (Best Song of 2022).
However, when these two programs were re-aired, they failed to attract audiences. Ha An Huy, after winning two championships, also failed to leave much of an impression on the public.
Along with The Voice and Vietnam Idol, Dancing with the Stars has been around for more than a decade and has gone through many seasons, so it's not hard to understand why its appeal has declined.
Returning to the 2024 version, Dancing with the Stars has yet to make an impression despite efforts to invite many famous faces such as Miss Hoang Phuong, Truong Quynh Anh, Phuong Oanh...
The competition “Rap Viet” once “made waves” when it launched season 1 with many new things, but after season 4, its appeal has significantly decreased. The competition “The Heroes - Idol vs. Idol” gathered a group of famous singers, loved by young people such as: Erik, Han Sara, Quan A.P, Orange... only received attention at first.
Why do game shows not have any appeal when they return?
Many years ago, social networks were not as explosive as they are now, and promotion and audience reach were not as good as they are now. Nowadays, the audience's demand for watching game shows has changed, making competition shows less attractive and less watched than before.
Audience preferences are key to a game show’s success. Currently, the audience for game shows is still concentrated among young people. Therefore, many producers are forced to constantly innovate to suit the tastes of this audience segment.
At the end of 2024, the audience witnessed the fever of "Call Me by Fire" and "Anh trai say hi" with a series of hits released, a series of famous faces, a youthful format... The two shows, one aimed at young people, the other honoring traditional cultural values, have retained viewers. However, game shows such as Dancing with the Stars, Vietnam Idol... still lack innovation in the script to attract viewers.
The fact that game shows are cooling down has caused many producers to struggle. Game shows that want to survive must not only focus on entertainment but also leave behind stories and especially seek out and produce generations of talented young people.
With such a competitive entertainment market today, it is not easy for game shows to gain a foothold in the hearts of the audience.
