Music copyright should be respected
Currently, not only audiences but also the professional world is quite vague about copyright and related rights in music. Many people still think that just paying the author is enough, but in reality, a complete musical work must be protected by three different types of rights. Author's rights, related rights, and producer rights must be respected because that is a culture of enjoyment, she said.
According to People's Artist Thanh Hoa, a song not only belongs to the composer but is also the result of the work of performing artists, musicians, recording technicians, arrangers, etc. All those who participate in the creation have a part in the product. In Vietnam, related rights are often taken lightly or overlooked.
She emphasized that in many countries, when works are reused such as being re-aired on television, streamed online or exploited commercially, the parties involved must pay additional remuneration to artists and producers. Singer can spend his whole life practicing to stick with a song, but when others use it, play it again or sing it again without paying for it, it is no different from taking away their effort and intelligence. copyright is the value of creative labor, just like vegetable farmers and bakers, everyone must be paid worthyly" - she shared.
In fact, awareness of intellectual property and related rights in Vietnamese music is still very limited, even in the artist world and art teaching. Many people still have the mentality of "artists are to contribute, buy, enjoy, serve", not yet recognizing artistic creation as a type of intellectual property with clear economic and legal value.
People's Artist Thanh Hoa cited karaoke establishments, supermarkets, restaurants, shopping malls, radio and television stations to public music events, bell music, waiting music... artists' products are widely used to serve business activities, but most creators are not paid for use. Many artists in their lifetime are only famous for one or two songs, but that work is exploited repeatedly on many platforms without being recognized. It is a form of abuse of gray matter and the creative labor of artists, she said.
We must learn to value artistic values as a unique intellectual property of each individual. It is not only the right of artists, but also the foundation for building a professional, civilized and sustainable creative environment. I hope that, through the copyright cooperation agreements signed this time, both artists and the public will better understand the value of creative labor, so that each artistic product is treated fairly and accurately as it deserves" - People's Artist Thanh Hoa expressed.
