On July 27, the Department of Irrigation and Natural Disaster Prevention - Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province said that at around 5:00 p.m. on July 26, at the spillway connecting Tan Trung village to Ban Con (Tan Lap commune, Quang Tri province), a car carrying 4 people was swept away by floodwaters while trying to cross a deeply flooded section, despite the fence and warning of danger.
According to the Department of Irrigation and Natural Disaster Prevention, a group of young men driving a car arbitrarily removed the barrier at around 5pm the same day to cross the spillway. As a result, the vehicle was swept away by the water. Fortunately, local people and authorities promptly responded, helping all 4 people escape safely. However, the car has not been found.
Previously, local authorities had set up barriers and put up warning signs of danger since the morning of July 26, to prevent people from passing through flooded areas. The incident occurred while the duty force was taking a dinner break.
In recent days, localized heavy rains have occurred in the mountainous areas of the Southwest of Quang Tri, causing many spillways and culverts to be flooded, disrupting traffic and seriously affecting production and life.
According to statistics as of noon on July 27, many traffic locations such as Chan Ro spillway (Dakrong commune), Ba Long and Ta Lang spillways (Ba Long commune) were still slightly flooded, but traffic has been basically restored.
Natural disasters have also damaged many infrastructure items: a negative slope of more than 20m long at the Cheng spillway (Tan Lap commune) was eroded, a section of concrete road in the Ta Xia spillway was washed away by water, the spillway in Van Ri village (Khe Sanh commune) is at risk of collapsing due to erosion nearly 1m deep.
In addition, small landslides were recorded in the Ka Tang - Lao Bao area and the West branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road.
Regarding production, nearly 22 hectares of rice in Khe Sanh and Tan Lap communes were flooded or buried, along with 1 hectare of fish pond in Tan Lap commune being damaged.
Currently, functional agencies and local authorities continue to inspect the situation, count the damage and deploy response measures to support people to soon stabilize their lives.
