On May 7, a delegation from Dong Thap province led by Mr. Ngo Chi Cuong - Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council - surveyed the current status of key irrigation works serving the Go Cong freshwater area.
The delegation surveyed at Xuan Hoa culvert - the main water intake culvert in the Go Cong freshwater area; Binh Phan pumping station; Tan Thuan Binh culvert area - where the siphon cluster is planned to be built across the Cho Gao canal; and many locations on the Tham Thu water supply and storage canal and Ram Ve canal - where raw water sources are planned to be stored for domestic, industrial and production purposes.

According to reports from specialized units, the Go Cong sweetening project area has an area of more than 54,000 hectares with about 500,000 people, adjacent to the East Sea and surrounded by the Cua Tieu River, Vam Co River and Cho Gao canal.
After more than 50 years of investment, the irrigation system in the area has gradually been completed with a network of regulating culverts, canals, sea dikes and continuous river dikes, basically meeting the requirements of controlling water sources, preventing drought and saltwater intrusion for about 44,000 hectares of agricultural land.
In addition to serving agricultural production, the irrigation system also plays an essential infrastructure role for the development of industrial zones and clusters such as Binh Dong, Gia Thuan, Soai Rap Oil and Gas Service Industrial Park as well as expanding the urban space, services and coastal tourism in the East of the province.
However, due to the sea-fronted area and interconnected freshwater sources being cut off by the Cho Gao canal, at the end of the dry season, especially when saltwater intrusion crosses Xuan Hoa culvert, the entire region faces the risk of freshwater shortage to serve production and people's lives.

After listening to the report on the investment plan for the project to transfer fresh water through the Cho Gao canal to supply water to the freshwater area of Go Cong, Secretary of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee Ngo Chi Cuong emphasized: "The addition of stable fresh water sources is of particular importance to socio-economic development in the Eastern region, especially in the dry season.
With that importance, the Secretary of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee requested the Provincial People's Committee and relevant departments and branches to urgently complete the solution to supplement water sources for the Go Cong freshwater area, and soon submit it to the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee for consideration and comments.
In addition, the Secretary of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee also requested the operating unit of Xuan Hoa culvert to study the application of science and technology in management and operation to improve the efficiency of water source regulation; pumping stations need to proactively ensure domestic water and irrigation for people in the dry season.
