On May 8, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung - Chairman of the Fisheries Union of Binh Chau commune, Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province said that people in An Hai village, Binh Chau commune, discovered elephants swimming about 50 m from shore. The fish was 3.7 m long, weighing 1.2 tons, drifting. Some people swam out to watch the fish swim back to sea, but due to poor health, the fish died.
To bring the fish to shore for burial, many people went into the water to fish. Meanwhile, another group held flags and went to buy tarpaulins under the fish belly to reduce the smoothness. Dozens of people stood on both sides, heads and tails carrying fish up the steps of the sea dyke.
Fishermen use cranes to bring fish from the seawall to the shrine, perform burial rituals and bury according to local customs.
Whale, also known as Ong fish, is considered by sea people to be a god of protection during storms and floods. When the fish are weak or injured, drifting to shore (eagle), the fishermen will bury them and worship them to show their respect.
