My Thuan Project Management Board has just sent a document to the Ministry of Construction on temporarily suspending the operation of the main route belonging to the component project of the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section of the North - South Expressway Project in the East, phase 2021-2025.

According to the My Thuan Project Management Board, implementing the direction of the Government and the Ministry of Construction on soon putting the project into operation to promote investment efficiency, the unit has organized temporary operation of the main route from January 19, 2026. The temporary operation is to celebrate the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and at the same time serve the travel needs of people during the peak Tet Nguyen Dan 2026.
However, according to reports from construction contractors and supervision consulting units, there are still some items under construction on the route such as drainage ditches, reinforcement of taluy slopes, cement concrete shoulders... Construction in the condition that the road is being exploited, although traffic safety measures have been implemented, still poses a risk of unsafety for people and vehicles participating in traffic, as well as workers and construction equipment.

In addition, the process of both construction and traffic diversion makes it difficult for the main units to deploy construction during the day to ensure safety, leading to the risk of prolonging the completion time of the remaining items.
Based on document No. 3629/BXD-KTQLXD dated March 6, 2026 of the Ministry of Construction of Vietnam on reviewing and strengthening traffic safety assurance in the process of operating component projects of the Can Tho - Hau Giang and Hau Giang - Ca Mau sections, along with the proposal of the Vietnam Traffic Police Department in document No. 889/CSGT-P7 dated February 25, 2026 on overcoming irrationalities on the Hau Giang - Ca Mau route, My Thuan Project Management Board has reviewed the actual site and proposed to temporarily suspend the operation of the main route of the project.
The expected temporary suspension of operation is from March 16, 2026 to the end of April 15, 2026.

During this time, vehicles traveling from Can Tho to Ca Mau can travel along the Can Tho - Hau Giang expressway to the IC5 intersection to exit National Highway 61, or travel along the Quan Lo - Phung Hiep route and National Highway 1A as before.
After completing the remaining construction items and fully implementing the acceptance procedures according to regulations, the My Thuan Project Management Board will report to the Ministry of Construction to consider putting the project into operation.
The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway project has a main route length of 110.85 km, divided into two component projects including the Can Tho - Hau Giang section, 37.07 km long, and the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section, 73.2 km long. The route is invested with a scale of 4 lanes, and is one of the key national transport projects in the Mekong Delta region.
