Speed ​​up the evacuation of people affected by landslides in Ben Tre

Ben Tre - Ben Tre City People's Committee is speeding up the appraisal process to hand over resettlement land to people affected by landslides so that they can soon have stable housing.

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre province, in the period from 2015 to 2024, there were 111 landslides and erosions in the province with a total length of about 115.6 km (102 riverbank landslides, 83.6 km long; 14 coastal landslides, 38.9 km long), causing damage to property, houses, land of people and local infrastructure.

In Ben Tre City, riverbank erosion is still occurring in Nhon Thanh Commune, Son Dong Commune and Ward 6... Currently, the People's Committees of these communes and wards have been supporting people to reinforce and stabilize on-site; at the same time, providing support so that people can enjoy policies in accordance with regulations.

Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc - Head of Ben Tre City Economic Department - said that as of August 8, 2024, through statistics and screening, there are 22 households in the area that are at risk of riverbank and canal landslides for consideration and support. Of which, in 2024, 5 households in Nhon Thanh commune will need support; in 2025, the remaining 17 households in Son Dong commune and Ward 6 will continue to be monitored and supported.

“In the immediate future, the local government has relocated the above 22 households to safe housing. Currently, the authorities of Ben Tre City are verifying and guiding each affected household to submit documents for accommodation arrangement and stabilization in accordance with the spirit of Resolution No. 02/2024/NQ-HDND dated April 24, 2024 of the Ben Tre Provincial People's Council,” Mr. Duoc informed.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Huy - Deputy Director of the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Agricultural Works and Rural Development of Ben Tre Province - said that the project to resettle people in the emergency landslide on the Ben Tre River bank has a total investment of more than 59 billion VND, invested by the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Agricultural Works and Rural Development of Ben Tre Province.

This project has a construction scale of 1,644 hectares, built in Ward 7 and Binh Phu Commune (Ben Tre City). Up to now, the unit has handed over 55/95 plots to the People's Committee of Ben Tre City and is preparing to hand over the remaining 40 plots to the city for management, arrangement and placement according to plan.

Mr. Huy also added that currently, the investor is directing the contractor to speed up the progress to complete the traffic route leading to the above project.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Huy, when the project is completed and put into use, households from areas at risk of landslides on Ben Tre river banks will be relocated and households in Ben Tre city with housing difficulties will be rearranged, as well as households in service infrastructure development planning areas will be relocated according to the overall socio-economic development plan of the locality.
