According to the draft project to reorganize commune-level administrative units, Kien Giang province aims to reorganize the province's grassroots administrative units with 48 grassroots administrative units. Of which, there are 3 special areas: Phu Quoc, Tho Chau, Kien Hai; 4 wards are Rach Gia, Vinh Thong, Ha Tien, To Chau and 41 communes. Thus, Kien Giang will decrease by 66.43% - compared to the current 143 commune-level administrative units.

According to the draft project to merge An Giang and Kien Giang provinces, An Giang province was established on the basis of merging the entire natural area of 3,53683km2, population of 2,741,851 people of An Giang province and the entire natural area of 6,352.08km2, population of 2,210,387 people of Kien Giang province.

As a result, An Giang province (after the merger) has 9,888.91 km2 (reaching 197.78% of the standard), a population of 4,952,238 people (reaching 353.73% of the standard) and 102 affiliated administrative units (including 85 communes, 14 wards and 3 special zones).
