Many waste treatment areas are expired
On February 8, Ms. Le Thi Thanh Hai, Head of the Economic Department, Nam Hong Linh ward, said that in the ward there is a landfill that has expired its operating period since 2022 but is still having to maintain receiving garbage because there is no place to dump garbage instead. This leads to garbage accumulation, affecting the surrounding environment.
The landfill in Son Tay commune has been operating since 2007 with a capacity of about 280,000m3 of garbage, receiving garbage from Son Tay, Son Kim 1, Son Kim 2 communes and some other localities that have also expired for more than 5 years. However, in the past time, garbage has still had to be received, leading to overload and pollution. Therefore, about a month ago, Son Tay commune authorities were forced to stop receiving garbage from neighboring localities to reduce the load.
Leaders of Son Tay Commune People's Committee affirmed that closing the landfill in the locality needs to be implemented soon because it has been overdue for many years, and at the same time, it is necessary to consider investing in a new waste treatment area to receive and treat waste to limit waste accumulation, environmental pollution, and affect people's lives.
The Loc Ha district (old) waste treatment area in Hong Loc commune has expired its operation since June 2025, but in the past, domestic waste from many localities has still been collected, causing overload and environmental pollution, and people living near this waste treatment area are upset.
Faced with that situation, at the end of January, Ha Tinh Provincial People's Committee issued a document directing to stop receiving garbage at this Hong Loc landfill. The Provincial People's Committee assigned Hong Loc commune to spray preparations to kill flies and mosquitoes; level and compact at garbage burial pits; operate a wastewater treatment system to protect the environmental sanitation of the landfill area and surrounding areas, not to affect the surrounding environment...
Need to build a modern, large-capacity waste treatment area
On February 8th, Mr. Dang Huu Binh, Head of the Environmental Department of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh province, informed that Ha Tinh is experiencing overload in domestic waste treatment, many waste treatment areas that have expired operations still have to receive waste to avoid pollution and accumulation of waste in residential areas. However, the collection of waste to treatment areas that have expired operations also affects the surrounding environment. Therefore, determining that closing landfills that have expired and are fully capacityed is an issue that must be done as soon as possible to avoid secondary and more severe pollution.
Also according to Mr. Binh, the amount of domestic waste in Ha Tinh province is about over 650 tons/day and night and is forecast to increase to about 1,000 tons/day and night by 2030. Investing in more waste treatment areas is an urgent requirement, including a Solid Waste Treatment Plant with modern waste treatment technology, large capacity in Hong Loc commune.
The Solid Waste Treatment Plant project in Hong Loc commune (also known as a waste-to-energy plant) is invested by An Duong Environment and Waste Treatment Joint Stock Company with a total investment of nearly 1,500 billion VND; treatment capacity of about 950 tons of waste/day and night, power generation capacity of 30 MW. Currently, the enterprise is implementing procedures according to the correct procedures to start the project. However, recently, when they learned about the upcoming start of the project, many people in Hong Loc commune protested against building a waste-to-energy plant in this locality because they were concerned about environmental impacts. Regarding the incident, Ha Tinh province has strengthened propaganda to get people's consensus and soon implement the project to solve the current household waste overload situation.
