People are upset about garbage
Recently, people in many localities such as Sam Son ward, Dong Quang ward, Bim Son ward (Thanh Hoa province) have been upset because the overloaded landfills, high-water in mountains, cause serious odor and water pollution.

Talking to reporters of Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Dong (residing in Sam Son Ward) said that the landfill located next to the Do River has caused serious pollution for many years. The stench from the landfill directly affects people's lives, especially households near this area.
The landfill is terribly polluted. Especially during the peak tourist season, the amount of garbage dumped has increased dramatically. Garbage has accumulated over many years, so now it is no different from a mountain. The water from the landfill flows black, the stench is extremely unpleasant" - Mr. Dong said.
As in Sam Son ward, Dong Nam landfill (Dong Quang ward) is in a state of overload, causing serious pollution. In May 2025, upset by the polluted landfill, many people gathered at the entrance to the landfill to prevent garbage trucks, causing garbage to accumulate and flood the streets of the central area of Thanh Hoa province.

Another landfill that is also considered a pollution hot spot is Nui Voi landfill in Bim Son ward. The landfill has been overloaded for many years, causing frustration for people living near this area.
"Not only the strong stench, black wastewater from the landfill flows straight into the environment, the fields and crops of the people, making everyone upset. We have made many recommendations but the problem has not been resolved yet, and is even more serious" - Mr. Bui Van Hung (residing in Bim Son ward) said.

According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper at these landfills, after many years, the waste is piled up as high as mountains, mostly in a state of odor and water pollution, greatly affecting the lives of people, especially residential areas living near the landfill.
Issuing a "ultimatum" to close the landfill
Regarding the overloaded landfill in Sam Son ward, the representative of the ward People's Committee said that, in response to the people's reflection and the urgency in handling the overloaded and polluted situation, the locality has determined that this is a task that must be implemented immediately.

"The ward is completing procedures to close the landfill. The treatment options have been agreed upon and it is expected to stop receiving waste from December 31" - said a representative of the People's Committee of Sam Son Ward.
Regarding Nui Voi landfill (Bim Son ward), a representative of the ward People's Committee said that the overload situation has been prolonged. Currently, the treatment is only at the deodorization and disinfection stage; thorough treatment must wait for the waste treatment plant to complete and put into operation.
"However, the difficulty is that the waste treatment plant project is very slow to implement, and has been extended for the 5th time but has not yet been completed. In the immediate future, the ward assigned the Environment Company to implement temporary measures to ensure environmental hygiene" - a representative of the People's Committee of Bim Son Ward informed.
In addition to the two landfills above, the Southeast landfill in Dong Quang ward is also overloaded, causing pollution, making people angry. To solve this problem, on November 27, 2025, the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province issued a document requesting urgent handling of the pollution situation at the landfill.

The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested Thanh Hoa Urban Environment and Construction Joint Stock Company to increase spraying of probiotics, inspection and reinforcement of tarpaulins to cover the surfaces of landfills. At the same time, coordinate with local authorities to spray insect repellent in residential areas. The landfill must strictly follow the process, minimize odor, thoroughly collect leachate and cover with tarpaulins after each working day.
In addition, from January 1, 2026, the landfill will stop receiving waste to move to the treatment plant. After closing, the landfill must be renovated and upgraded with a leachate treatment plant to prevent it from leaking into the environment.
