Before 2023, Mr. San Ngoc Huy (Bo Y ethnic group) in Quan Ba commune was a poor person, especially in difficulty in the locality. Not content with being surrounded by poverty, Mr. Huy decided to strive to develop the household economy by focusing on vegetables and fruits, which are the strength of the locality.
"I found that this area is very favorable for a cool climate and a stable source of irrigation water, so I decided to switch from growing corn to growing cucumbers and tomatoes. I also encourage households in the village to participate to form a growing area, with a total revenue of more than 1 billion VND per year, and the monthly income of the villagers is also more stable," said Mr. Huy.
For the past two years, Mr. Vang Mi Say's family (Dong Van commune) has escaped poverty and the economy has been increasingly improving thanks to converting ineffective corn land to grow potato ginseng. Planting trees are considered to have the advantage of soil and high income.
Mr. Say shared: Previously, people in the area mainly grew corn but the economic efficiency was low, even there were crops that were not enough to eat. With the support and guidance of the government, I and 19 households in the village have switched to growing potato ginseng. With more than 500 m2 of land for growing potato ginseng this year, my family earned nearly 30 million VND, 4 times more than growing corn.
Similarly, in the difficult border commune of Son Vi, along with programs to support production and create sustainable poverty reduction livelihoods, the local government has mobilized people to focus on converting crop structure and effectively exploiting land potential towards commodity production.

Many households that are already poor and particularly disadvantaged after being supported to develop production and convert crops have brought pear, plum, star fruit, turmeric, and ginger seeds to plant, initially bringing positive results, with an income 1.5 - 2 times higher than before.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Sac - Secretary of the Party Committee of Son Vi commune - said that the locality has identified the key goal in the coming time as increasing income, improving people's lives associated with sustainable poverty reduction.
"We promote the conversion of crop and livestock structure, exploit the potential of land and local labor, focus on mobilizing and effectively integrating resources from national target programs, creating sustainable livelihoods.
Currently, the average income per capita of the whole commune is 26 million VND/year, an increase of nearly 9 million VND compared to 2020. Strive to have an average income per capita in the commune of over 38 million VND/year by 2030, the poverty rate will decrease by an average of 5%/year," said Mr. Sac.
In 2025, Tuyen Quang province will continue to effectively implement the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, including increasing support for production development in the agricultural sector with the goal of supporting the improvement of agricultural, forestry and fishery production capacity.
The beneficiaries are poor households, poor households, newly escaped poverty households, people with disabilities (without stable livelihoods), poor ethnic minority households... helping to change production thinking, create stable income, and contribute to sustainable poverty reduction.
Ms. Vuong Ngoc Ha - Vice Chairman of Tuyen Quang Provincial People's Committee - said that in the coming time, the province will support the conversion of crops and livestock appropriately, connect value chains, and encourage the form of cooperatives and social enterprises.
"Mobilize and propagate to help people change, no longer rely on support from the Central Government and the province, instead encourage self-reliance to escape poverty sustainably", Vice Chairman of Tuyen Quang Provincial People's Committee informed.
