When renovated, the Hy Vong canal is expected to contribute to reducing environmental pollution, increasing drainage capacity for the basin by more than 51 hectares, especially in the Tan Son Nhat airport area.
Along with that, two roads along the canal will be built to make people's travel more convenient, while increasing the value of land on both banks.

The Hy Vong canal renovation project (formerly Tan Binh district) was a project of the Tham Luong - Ben Cat - Nuoc Len canal pollution treatment project (phase 2). Since 2013, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has agreed to implement it with budget capital.
In 2014, the World Bank (WB) proposed to include this item in the Ho Chi Minh City and Ho Chi Minh City Flood Risk Management Project, and agreed with the above plan. According to the plan, the canal section of more than 1.8 km is being renovated with a total investment of 110 billion VND, implemented in the period of 2016 - 2021.
However, in 2017, the WB stopped sponsoring, causing the project to be temporarily suspended to find other sources of capital.
In 2018, the Ho Chi Minh City Flood Control Program Management Center proposed to switch to investment using state budget capital, with a total cost of about 150 billion VND. However, the project continues to face difficulties in site clearance, capital allocation and investment procedures, so it cannot be implemented.
After that, Ho Chi Minh City assigned the Department of Construction to re-compile a pre-feasibility study report. By April 2024, the Department of Construction had completed the dossier and submitted it to the Department of Planning and Investment for appraisal to be expected to submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council for consideration of the investment policy in 2024. However, the project has not been submitted.

According to the plan of the Department of Construction, the Hy Vong canal will be renovated from Pham Van Bach street to Tham Luong canal, more than 1.1 km long. The project mainly builds rectangular open canals; arranges 55 water intake holes along the banks, builds 9 new discharge culverts and culverts across the road.
Along both sides of the canal, a 6 m wide road will be built, with sidewalks, lighting systems, railings and synchronous technical infrastructure.
The total estimated investment is about 1,980 billion VND, entirely from the budget. Of which, the cost of compensation and site clearance is up to VND 1,595 billion, the area to be cleared is about 21,200 m2 and affects 179 houses.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee's assignment of the Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board to re-stream the pre-feasibility study report is expected to help the project be "restarted" soon, gradually bringing the Hy Vong canal out of the pollution and chaos of many years.
