Da Nang - In the midst of the historic flood, when the electricity was about to run out, doctors and nurses at Dien Ban Regional General Hospital inhaled gasoline from motorbikes to maintain machinery and save patients' lives.

Flood center and unprecedented challenges

In the recent historic flood, Dien Ban Regional General Hospital, Da Nang City (formerly Quang Nam Province) became a symbol of resilience and the spirit of "medical salary as from model". Despite being completely isolated in the middle of the ocean, the medical team and staff here have made extraordinary efforts to ensure the safety and care of thousands of patients and their families.

Located in the low-lying area of Dien Ban town, the hospital suffered an unprecedented severe flood. According to Mr. Le Minh Doan - Chairman of the hospital's Trade Union, the flood level this year is much higher than previous years, in some places in the hospital grounds it is up to 2m deep. The entire first floor, including the Emergency Department, was submerged in water; other departments were also flooded from 1.3 to 1.6m.

During the 5 days and 4 nights of isolation, the hospital became a shelter for more than 1,000 patients and their families, along with more than 130 medical staff. The situation is especially criticized as food sources, clean water and medical oxygen are at risk of running low, while generators - the "heart" of the medical equipment system are about to run out of fuel.

According to Mr. Le Minh Doan, when the amount of diesel for the generator is almost exhausted, the lives of hundreds of patients in the Emergency, Resuscitation and Cardiovascular Department are as heavy as thousands of cables hanging on hair. All respiratory equipment and oxygen trackers are completely dependent on electricity.

In an emergency, the hospital's Board of Directors promptly decided to mobilize fuel from the motorbikes of doctors, patients and family members on the 2nd floor, to fuel the generator. This solution has helped the hospital maintain a medical equipment system, ensuring continuous treatment for patients.

In the face of the urgent situation, the Party Committee and the hospital's Board of Directors also quickly connected with the police, army and rescue forces. The soldiers crossed the rushing water, using canoes to supply food, drinking water and fuel to the hospital. Thanks to that, more than 1,000 people inside were safe, no one was hungry or affected in health.

When doctors put aside their concerns for patients

During that difficult time, many doctors and nurses could not return home to be able to take care of their families and homes. As Dr. Ha Phuong Khanh (Obs upper stillness Department) shared: "Because I was home alone, my parents died, so when the flood came right at the duty session, I could not leave. All of my assets in the house, such as the washing machine, refrigerator, etc., were swept away, but I knew I had to stay with the patient."

The sacrifice of Dr. Khanh is also the common spirit of the medical team here. Despite fatigue and anxiety, they still stay at the hospital, both treating patients and taking care of logistics, sharing meals and bottles of water.

Immediately after the water receded, hundreds of officers, soldiers and hospital staff cleaned and disinfected the entire campus, urgently putting the departments back into operation. The gifts and timely encouragement from the city, the Labor Federation and organizations and individuals have boosted the spirit of the medical team in the flood center.

Overcoming this historic flood, Dien Ban Regional General Hospital not only recovered from natural disasters but also left a beautiful image of dedicated and brave doctors who always put patients above all.
