The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway expansion project is one of 250 projects and works that were started and inaugurated simultaneously at 80 locations in 34 provinces and cities across the country in a direct combination with online celebration of the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution and the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).
Mr. Truong Viet Dong - Chairman of VEC's Board of Members said that after the project was approved by the Government for implementation, VEC has directed consulting units to complete the survey work, prepare a feasibility study report, and organize the selection of contractors, designers and construction in parallel, in order to speed up the progress, start construction on time from today (August 19) and strive to basically complete it to put it into operation in December 2026.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the project, Minister of Finance Nguyen Van Thang said that this is a project of strategic significance, expanding development space not only for Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province but also for the entire key economic region in the South.
The project will ensure synchronous exploitation with the Long Thanh International Airport project, contributing to meeting increasingly high transportation needs, shortening travel time and costs, better serving people and tourists, promoting socio-economic development, and at the same time strengthening national defense and security.

"The project has a very large workload, many complex and difficult bridge and road items. Therefore, in addition to VEC's determination, contractors, supervision consultants, etc., we hope to continue to receive close coordination and support from Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai in site clearance, material supply, ensuring security, order and traffic safety throughout the construction process," the Minister emphasized.
The project to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh expressway section passing through Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai has a total length of about 22 km, starting at the Ring Road 2 intersection, Ho Chi Minh City (Km4+000) and ending at the intersection with the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway, Dong Nai province (Km25+920).
The project has a basic route following the old road, expanded to both sides. The section across Long Thanh Bridge will be expanded to the right side of the existing route (downstream).

Regarding the scale of the project, the section from the Ring Road 2 intersection to the Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3 intersection (Km4+000-Km8+844.5) will be invested in expanding from 4 lanes to 8 lanes.
In the section from the Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3 intersection to the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway intersection, excluding the Long Thanh bridge (Km8+844.5-Km25+910) will be invested in expanding from 4 lanes to 10 lanes.
As for Long Thanh Bridge, invest in building a new bridge with a scale of 5 complete lanes in the direction from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh, on the right side of the existing bridge.
The project is classified as a special-level project, with technical standards for the section Km4+000 - Km25+920 meeting the standards of a highway level 120, corresponding to a design speed of 120km/h, while Long Thanh bridge is operated at a speed of 100km/h.
The total investment of the project is more than 16,300 billion VND. Of which, VND6,500 billion is state budget capital and more than VND9,800 billion is mobilized by VEC.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with Long Thanh bridge alone expected to be closed in December 2026 and the remaining items completed in the first quarter of 2027.
After completion and putting into operation, the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh expressway expansion project will contribute to completing the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway according to the approved planning scale, meeting the increasingly high demand for transportation, shortening transportation costs, conveniently connecting with Long Thanh International Airport and Ho Chi Minh City, serving socio-economic development, ensuring security and defense for the Southern Key Economic Zone.
