Through inspection, Typhoon Yagi caused serious damage to the 5,000-seat multi-purpose stadium, with more than 2,000 square meters of exterior panels peeling off, 456 square meters of plaster ceiling and many glass walls damaged.
Immediately after the storm, the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province directed urgent repairs.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Luc, Commander of DST Vietnam Corporation (construction contractor) - said: "Main items such as the exterior cladding, railings, wastewater treatment tank, and plaster ceiling have been completed. Currently, only the installation of the lighting system in the gymnasium remains. By November 31, the project will be completely completed."
The 5,000-seat multi-purpose stadium in Dai Yen ward (Ha Long city) is an iconic project of Quang Ninh province with a unique design inspired by the shape of an island (turtle shape) located in Ha Long Bay.
The project won the award "Excellent design in Vietnam by foreign architects" at the 2018 National Architecture Awards.
The stadium has hosted major sporting events such as the 31st SEA Games and the final round of the 2024 Asia-Pacific Robot Competition.
From December 3-9, 2024, the project will continue to be the venue for the 2024 Asian Police Taekwondo Open, expected to have the participation of more than 2,500 delegates and athletes from 46 countries and territories.
To ensure the success of the event, the Provincial People's Committee has established an Organizing Committee with 4 sub-committees, including 20 departments, branches and 6 localities coordinating the implementation.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Quang Ninh province, affirmed: "All stages from reception, ceremony, to technical expertise are closely implemented. We are committed to bringing a professional tournament, demonstrating the position of Quang Ninh on the international sports map".
