According to the People's Committee of Phu Quoc Special Zone, based on the results of consulting with voters representing households in the neighborhoods to change their names, the People's Committee of the Special Zone submitted to the People's Council of the special zone for consideration and resolution to change the names of 46/51 neighborhoods and keep the names of 5/51 neighborhoods in the special zone of Phu Quoc.
Implement the Resolution of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units of An Giang province in 2025, in which the entire natural area and population of Duong Dong ward, An Thoi ward and the communes of Duong To, Ham Ninh, Cua Duong, Bai Thom, Ganh Dau, Cua Can are arranged into special zones called Phu Quoc special zone.
After the arrangement, Phu Quoc special zone is a commune-level administrative unit, recognized as an urban type according to the provisions of law, with a natural area of 575.29 km2 and a population of 157,629 people, 51 neighborhoods, 585 self-governing People's Groups, with many advantages for socio-economic development.
However, out of 51 neighborhoods in the Phu Quoc special zone, 19/51 neighborhoods have the same name. Pursuant to current regulations guiding the organization and operation of villages and residential groups: The names of villages and residential groups due to newly established or merged shall not be the same as the names of existing villages and residential groups in the same commune-level administrative unit. Therefore, the development of a Plan to rename neighborhoods in Phu Quoc special zone is an urgent requirement and must be implemented in accordance with the policy of the competent authority.
According to the People's Committee of the special zone, the renaming is to facilitate administrative management and population in the special zone area and ensure the principle that the names of villages and residential groups (wards) due to newly established or merged cannot overlap with the names of existing neighborhoods in the same commune-level administrative unit. At the same time, it ensures that traditional historical values associated with long-standing landmarks are easy to read, remember, and identify, while minimizing disruption caused by changing the names of neighborhoods in the special zone.
