7,000 workers, 3,000 pieces of equipment to construct Long Thanh airport
According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper at the construction site in late December 2024, the Long Thanh Airport Component 3 project (Dong Nai) is being vigorously constructed, the appearance of the bid packages of this project is becoming increasingly clear.
The passenger terminal package has completed the rough construction, and the steel frame roof structure is being installed by the construction units. The shape of the project, which is considered the "heart" of the Long Thanh Airport Project, is increasingly revealed with a sharp lotus-shaped design. Next to the passenger terminal, the runway of Long Thanh Airport is being completed, preparing for the installation of technical equipment.
According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), currently the main bidding packages are being deployed at the construction site with hundreds of construction teams including nearly 7,000 experts, engineers, workers, laborers and nearly 3,000 construction equipment.
In particular, package 5.10 - passenger terminal is expected to complete the entire construction before December 2025 and carry out finishing work, equipment installation, system connection, and trial operation from the beginning of 2026; Package 4.6 constructs runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking lots. ACV is determined to direct construction units to complete and put into technical operation before April 30, 2025, 3 months ahead of schedule; Package 6.12 constructs the traffic system connecting routes 1 and 2, expected to be completed and handed over for use in December 2025...
At the Long Thanh airport component 2 project, the air traffic control tower has taken shape, is being electromechanical and is installing a steel roof structure.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet - Deputy General Director in charge of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) - said: "The investor is actively coordinating with contractors to deploy and maintain progress, determined to soon put Long Thanh airport phase 1 into operation."
The Long Thanh airport project phase 1 includes four component projects 1, 2, 3 and 4. Up to now, in addition to the works of component project 3 and component project 2 which are creating a clear appearance, the remaining component projects including component project 1 (headquarters of state management agencies) and component project 4 (ground service works) are being accelerated so that Long Thanh airport can be synchronously exploited in 2026.
Airport connection infrastructure "racing" for progress
Besides the component projects at Long Thanh airport under urgent construction, the traffic infrastructure projects connecting to Long Thanh airport are also "racing" for progress.
Deputy Minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan said that in phase 1, Long Thanh airport is expected to receive 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year, of which 70-85% are international flights and mainly to/from Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the plan, traffic connecting to/from Long Thanh airport is by 2 methods: road and rail, including 5 road routes and 3 rail routes. Regarding rail, there are 2 main routes including the urban railway connecting Thu Thiem to Long Thanh airport and the North-South high-speed railway from Thu Thiem station to Long Thanh airport, which has just been approved by the National Assembly for investment policy, expected to start construction in 2027.
Road traffic routes include Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway, Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3, Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway (all 3 projects are under implementation, expected to be completed in 2025-2026), Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 4 (investment policy has been submitted). Particularly, the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway is expected to be expanded to 8-10 lanes...
Dong Nai province also decided to implement 3 traffic infrastructure projects (including the project to upgrade and expand provincial road 769, provincial road 773 and invest in building new provincial road 770B) to connect localities in the province with Long Thanh airport, with a total investment of more than 18,000 billion VND.
Chairman of Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee Vo Tan Duc has agreed to add two other projects, including upgrading provincial road 25B and upgrading and expanding provincial road 25C, to the list of key projects to connect Long Thanh airport.
On December 3, 2024, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh directly inspected the status of the Long Thanh Airport Project, connecting infrastructure and planning, urban development of Long Thanh Airport and surrounding areas. The Prime Minister requested that all projects must be completed before December 31, 2025, to put Long Thanh Airport into operation in 2026.
