At around 4:30 p.m. on November 2, people suddenly discovered a young man climbing over the railing of Ben Thuy Bridge (connecting National Highway 1A through Nghe An - Ha Tinh) and then jumping into Lam River. Because the water was deep and flowing rapidly, no one dared to go down to save them, so people immediately called Mr. Hoang Van Manh (45 years old) and Mr. Dau Van Toan (35 years old, Mr. Manh's wife, both residing in Truong Vinh ward, Nghe An).
Despite the rain and wind, the two men rowed a boat to the foot of the bridge, searched for and pulled the victim to shore.
Because the Lam River water was rising due to floods, the young man was swept away and trapped in the bridge piers, so he was rescued in time. The victim was taken to Mr. Manh's house to change clothes and warm up. The young man said he was conscious and had given up the idea of committing suicide. People reported to the police and contacted the victim's family (residing in Nghe An) to take him home.
Previously, Mr. Manh and Mr. Toan had saved a person who jumped from Ben Thuy Bridge three times - including a teenager, a female student of Ha Tinh and a drunk man.
