Lai Chau - Last victim found in flash flood in Muong Than on a hydropower reservoir.

Functional forces have found the last missing victim in the flash flood that occurred in Muong Than commune on July 17, closing the search work after a week of efforts.

On July 24, Muong Than Commune People's Committee (Lai Chau province) said that at about 1 pm on the same day, Muong Than Commune Police discovered a female body floating on the surface of Muong Mit Hydropower Lake, in Muong Mit village.

By 3 pm, functional agencies identified the victim as Ms. Do Thi Hoa (born 1969, residing in Chit village, Muong Than commune) - the person missing in the flash flood that occurred on July 17.

After completing the procedures according to regulations, the victim's body was handed over to the family for funeral arrangements.

The discovery of Mrs. Hoa also means that all victims in the flash flood have been found.

According to local statistics, the flash flood on July 17 in Muong Than commune killed 9 people, including 8 permanent residents in Muong Than commune and 1 permanent resident in Pac Ta commune. In addition, the natural disaster also injured 9 people.

Immediately after the incident occurred, more than 700 officers and soldiers of the police, army, militia and many vehicles and machinery were mobilized to the scene to search for missing people, evacuate people and support the overcoming of consequences.

In parallel with rescue work, functional forces have deployed traffic clearance, distributed essential goods, supported people to relocate property, cleaned houses and reviewed areas at risk of landslides to ensure safety.

Faced with the heavy damage caused by floods, on July 20, the Government decided to urgently support 50 billion VND for Lai Chau province to overcome the consequences. According to initial statistics, the total damage caused by natural disasters in the area is estimated at 270 billion VND.

On July 21, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung visited Muong Than commune to inspect search and rescue work, visit families with deceased and missing people, and encourage households who are being evacuated.

The working delegation also surveyed the planned location for building a concentrated resettlement area for about 24 households who lost their homes after the natural disaster.

Towards the people affected by floods

From July 16 to July 17, 2026, prolonged heavy rain occurred in Muong Than commune, Lai Chau province, causing flash floods, landslides and serious landslides, sweeping away 13 houses of people. By 5 pm on July 20, 2026, natural disasters had caused 07 deaths, 02 missing people and 08 injured people, causing heavy damage to people and property, pushing many families into extremely difficult circumstances.
