The cause of deforestation in Dak Nong is still increasing

THANH QUỲNH |

Dak Nong - Despite implementing many measures, deforestation remains complicated, with an increasing number of violations.

Dak Nong has a large forest area of over 248,000 hectares. In recent times, the work of forest protection and development has always been given attention, closely and resolutely directed.

However, deforestation is still complicated, the number of violations is increasing, and the nature is complicated.

In December 2024 alone, the province detected 36 violations. Of these, 29 were illegal deforestation cases with an area of 4.96 hectares. This brought the total number of violations in 2024 to 322. Deforestation alone had 207 cases with an area of 45.36 hectares.

Compared to 2023, the total number of violations was 39 more (up 17.3%), the number of deforestation cases was 60 more (up 40.8%), and the area of deforested forest was 16.96 hectares more (up 57.9%).

Authorities have handled 41 violations, confiscated 13,978 cubic meters of wood, and imposed administrative fines of more than VND98 million.

According to the Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee, there are many causes of deforestation. The deforesters are becoming more and more reckless and sophisticated, such as: throwing dirt into forest protection stations, using nail traps, using electric saws, machetes, cutting, chopping down half of the tree, waiting for it to fall...

This makes it difficult for authorities to detect and prevent violations.

In addition, the large forest area, widely distributed, scattered, bordering many provinces, and complex and rugged terrain make it difficult to patrol, manage and protect the forest.

The increase in mechanical population, mainly free migrants from other provinces, living in and near forests, causes difficulties for the government and authorities in the control process.

In addition, fertile land, suitable for many crops, high agricultural prices lead to increasing demand for production land, creating great pressure on forest resources.

Most of the land planned for forestry development is currently being encroached upon by people to grow industrial and agricultural crops. The enforcement and clearance of these areas is facing many difficulties.
