Lao Cai - After more than 6 years of implementation, the National Highway 279 upgrade project is entering the final stage.

The National Highway 279 upgrade project is a key traffic project, of important significance in completing infrastructure, strengthening regional linkages, connecting northern mountainous provinces with the Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway and international border gates.

The project is funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Australian Government, including two connecting routes with a total length of about 200km, with a total investment of more than 6,000 billion VND.

The section passing through Van Ban old district (Lao Cai province) is about 60km long, mainly on the existing National Highway 279. Implementation time is in the period 2019-2026.

Records of Lao Dong Newspaper reporters on January 6 at the IC16 intersection area of Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway show that many sections of the route have completed the main items, vehicles can circulate conveniently. Because it is a connecting point with the expressway, the traffic volume is large, so upgrading and expanding National Highway 279 is very urgent.

At the construction site, dozens of workers and many machines and equipment are urgently leveling the roadbed, making drainage ditches, and pouring concrete in the remaining sections. The working atmosphere is urgent, focusing on the completion phase.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, a driver on the Lai Chau - Hanoi route, said that the investment in upgrading National Highway 279 makes travel more convenient, but the prolonged construction process makes traffic difficult.

We hope the road will be completed soon so that the movement is safe and fast," Mr. Phuc shared.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Mai Van Cuong - representative of Project Management Board 2 (Ministry of Construction) - said that site clearance work in Van Ban old district has been basically completed, reaching about 99%. The project is focusing manpower to basically complete before the Lunar New Year.

However, package XL-01 still has site clearance problems at a household in Van Ban commune, affecting the overall progress. Relevant units are coordinating to remove obstacles to soon hand over site clearance to the construction contractor.
