The canal surface is scum and foul smell
The Bac Nam Hung canal, over 8 km long, flows through Nam Son ward, An Duong district and Hung Vuong ward, Hong Bang district. The Bac Nam Hung Canal is responsible for collecting water from the Tan Hung Hong Canal (Re River branch) to supply irrigation water for agricultural land in Nam Son Ward; receiving and draining rainwater and wastewater from residential areas, production and business service establishments in Nam Son Ward and Hung Vuong Ward.
At the end of 2024, this canal has been repeatedly reported for pollution. Recently, people in Nam Son ward, An Duong district continued to report the situation of ice on the Bac Nam Hung canal section across Road 351.
At noon on March 18, Lao Dong Newspaper's reporter noted that the section of the North-South canal across Road 351 was covered with brown, oil on both sides of the canal, and had a foul smell. The canal section is about 2 km long and runs through Nam Son ward with brown water.

Speaking with Lao Dong, a representative of the leader of An Hai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited (the unit managing, exploiting and operating the Bac Nam Hung canal) said that the pollution of the Bac Nam Hung canal has been going on for a long time. In 2024 alone, the unit recorded many times when the canal water turned dark yellow and red.
Regarding the landslide at the canal section near Road 351 in recent days, according to the Company's leadership representative, it is likely due to domestic wastewater.
detecting and punishing many discharge units
Also according to An Hai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, in 2024, the city's authorities discovered and fined a number of enterprises discharging waste into the Bac Nam Hung canal. Typically, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (now the Department of Agriculture and Environment) fined Trung Thien Company Limited (Vietnam) VND 665 million for 2 acts: Not having an environmental license as prescribed and discharging wastewater exceeding technical standards on waste into the Bac Nam Hung canal. This company was also suspended from operation of the waste generating source without an environmental license for 4.5 months.
At the end of December 2024, An Hai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited and the authorities of An Duong district (now An Duong district) inspected and discovered that Manh Bac Company Limited (Nam Son ward) discharged untreated wastewater into the Bac Nam Hung canal irrigation system. At the time of inspection at 11:30 on December 20, 2024, the unit discharged white foam water, brick brown, dark yellow, and foul odor, seriously polluting the canal water source.

With many drastic handling of violating businesses, the pollution in the Bac Nam Hung canal has now decreased significantly, with no more red blood cells or green blood cells due to chemicals. Only the black canal water and foul odor from domestic wastewater from residential areas are discharged directly into the canal.
"Since the Bac Nam Hung canal was polluted, the company has changed the flow direction of the canal, preventing it from flowing into the Re River - a source of raw water for the city's clean water production. In the long term, we still have to wait for the city to invest in a system to collect and treat domestic wastewater in An Duong district, completely overcoming the pollution of Bac Nam Hung canal" - said a representative of An Hai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited.
It is known that the People's Committee of Hai Phong City has just approved a project to collect and treat domestic wastewater in An Duong District, Thuy Nguyen City and 5 districts of Kien Thuy, An Lao, Vinh Bao, Tien Lang, Cat Hai by 2030, with a vision to 2040. In particular, priority is given to early investment in stations in the basin affecting freshwater supply for clean water plants and new urban development areas.
