Drivers hope for support policies when switching to electric taxis

HOÀI ANH |

Before the information that Hanoi sets a target to complete the conversion of all gasoline and oil taxis to electric and green-energy taxis by 2030 at the latest, many drivers expressed their interest and expectations, but also many concerns.

Need a "lever" of finance and synchronous infrastructure

Mr. Tran Minh Quan (Soc Son commune, Hanoi) - who has more than 10 years of taxi driving experience, said that he supports the policy of conversion for the benefit of the environment and urban image. According to Mr. Quan, what taxi drivers want most is financial support policies.

If they are supported with low-interest loans, extended installment payment periods or businesses stand out to invest in cars, brothers will be more assured to work" - Mr. Quan confided.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hoang Minh (Cau Giay ward, Hanoi), a taxi driver with 6 years of experience, is worried about the charging time and daily travel distance: "Customers now like electric cars because they are smooth and do not smell of gasoline. I am currently driving for 10 - 12 hours a day. If I have to wait to charge the car, my income will be affected. I hope the charging station system will be widespread, avoiding long waiting times" - Mr. Minh said.

He also hopes that the city will soon announce a specific roadmap for each stage, and at the same time organize training for drivers to get acquainted with new technology.

Regarding the city's policy of converting all gasoline and oil taxis to electric and green-energy taxis, Mr. Ta Minh Ngoc - Director of Noi Bai Taxi Co., Ltd. - said that electric taxis have appeared on the market for several years now, so the conversion is not too new.

My point of view is to agree with the general policy. However, the accompanying policies must be really reasonable for businesses to easily implement. If the infrastructure does not meet the requirements, businesses will face many difficulties" - the director shared.

According to Mr. Ngoc, the conversion of all gasoline cars to electric vehicles requires large capital, so financial support packages will help businesses reduce initial pressure. He expects the city to have a policy to support low-interest loans to reduce pressure on businesses.

The Director of Noi Bai Taxi Company affirmed that the unit is planning and calculating financial resources: "Our vehicle batch will expire in July 2027, so it will be until the end of this year to discuss more carefully and calculate the conversion plan.

Orientation for green transportation development

Previously, the Hanoi People's Committee issued a plan to convert fossil fuel taxis to electricity and green energy in Hanoi City.

Accordingly, the city organizes the effective implementation of the roadmap for converting fossil fuel taxis (gasoline, oil) to using electricity and green energy in the direction of developing green and sustainable transportation; contributing to the implementation of national targets on emission reduction in the transportation sector, improving the quality of urban air environment.

The roadmap is no later than 2030, completing the conversion of all gasoline and oil taxis to electric and green-energy taxis in the city (the conversion roadmap in 2026 reaches 63-64%; in 2027 reaches 68-70%; in 2028 reaches 74-77%; in 2029 reaches 88-96%; in 2030 reaches 100%). At the same time, building mechanisms and policies to encourage and support taxi transport businesses to proactively convert vehicles, ensuring harmony of interests between the State, businesses and people.
