Choose a favorite major or a famous school?
This year's enrollment season features many new majors in technology, data, and digital transformation; STEM human resource development policies also make the engineering and technology sectors more concerned.
According to Mr. Cu Xuan Tien - Head of the Admissions and Student Affairs Department of the University of Economics and Law (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), this is an opportunity for learners to access fields with high human resource demand in the future. However, the choice of major should not only be based on market trends.
Social needs are an important factor, but students should not chase after all the majors that are considered trends. It is necessary to choose a major that suits their interests, passions and abilities" - Mr. Tien assessed.
According to Mr. Tien, no matter what field you study in, learners also have the opportunity to develop if they really love and invest seriously. In a modern economy, industries have their own roles and complement each other.
Nguyen Thao Vy - a 12th grade student in Ho Chi Minh City - said that she once hesitated between Information Technology and Multimedia Communications majors.
I see that Information Technology is being chosen by many people, so I also want to study. But after carefully studying the training program and actual work, I realized that I am more suitable for content creation and communication fields. I decided to choose the major I like to be able to stick with it for a long time" - Vy shared.
Three levels of aspirations to reduce risk
One of the common mistakes of candidates is placing aspirations according to the psychology of "probably passing" instead of the level of preference.
Dr. Pham Tan Ha - Director of the Admissions Counseling Center of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) - said that candidates should boldly place their favorite major or school at the highest position.
The admission system will determine the highest aspiration that candidates are eligible to pass. Therefore, please arrange according to your desired order" - Mr. Ha said.
According to Mr. Ha, candidates can divide their wish list into three groups: Dream group, group suitable for current capacity and safe group. This arrangement helps both ensure admission opportunities and not miss the desired major.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan - Head of Training Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry - also said that the policy of registering aspirations should not be changed just because of fluctuations in score distribution or benchmark score forecasts.
The important thing is that students choose the major and school they really want. If the score distribution changes, the benchmark score will also change correspondingly. Therefore, you should not change the entire admission strategy because of worry" - Dr. Nhan assessed.
This expert also believes that the question "choose school or choose major" is still always raised in each enrollment season. However, the priority factor is the major.
The ability of learners after graduation determines job opportunities. If they do not love the major, it is very difficult to achieve good results. Conversely, when studying the major they are passionate about, even in a school that is not too famous, they can still succeed" - Dr. Nhan said.
According to experts, choosing a major is not the only decision for life, but it is an important starting point. Therefore, candidates need to spend time carefully researching enrollment information, training programs and career opportunities of each major before registering their aspirations.
3 mistakes that easily make candidates lose the opportunity to be admitted
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Higher Education Department (Ministry of Education and Training), in recent years, many candidates have still made regrettable mistakes in the process of registering for admission.
The first error, registering or adjusting aspirations but not completing the final confirmation step, causing the system not to record information.
The second error, adjusting aspirations but forgetting to re-confirm after the change, led to the system only saving old data.
The third error, incorrectly entering the school code or major code due to the names of training institutions having many similarities.
Mr. Dung also reminded candidates to carefully review personal information, exam scores and admission evidence before completing registration. When arranging aspirations, it is necessary to place them in the desired order because the system will consider the highest aspirations that candidates are eligible to pass.
