Tet flower farms in Dak Nong cope with adverse weather

Dak Nong - Flower growers here are facing disadvantages due to erratic weather, which negatively affects the growth of crops.

According to gardeners, ornamental plants for the Tet market are very sensitive to the environment and unpredictable weather. In particular, too high temperatures can cause flowers to wilt, bloom unevenly or not bloom at all.

On the contrary, too low temperature reduces the ability to flower, causing great losses to growers.

Previously, Mr. Nguyen Van Hien’s family in Dak R’lap district (Dak Nong) used to grow 1,000-1,500 pots of chrysanthemums each year. However, this year the family only invested in about 500 pots.

Mr. Hien said that the number of flower pots is gradually decreasing due to low consumption demand and difficult-to-control fungal diseases, so those who grow a lot are likely to lose money.

"I reduced the quantity to focus on care, prevent diseases well and only sell beautiful flower pots, ensuring quality for consumers" - Mr. Hien shared.

Faced with difficulties in growing flowers outdoors, Mr. Huynh Manh Thanh in Gia Nghia city invested in building a 200m² modern greenhouse to grow flowers.

His family has built two solid greenhouses, covered with nylon, equipped with lighting, misting and automatic drip irrigation systems.

Thanks to this system, Mr. Thanh grows tens of thousands of flowers of all kinds such as chrysanthemums and gerberas without being affected by the weather, the flowers bloom on time and are of high quality.

“Growing flowers in a greenhouse allows us to take full control of the care process, regardless of the weather. Thanks to that, growers can easily create a seasonal schedule, harvest on time for the holidays to sell at a high price,” Mr. Thanh shared.

Leaders of Dak Nong Agricultural Development Department recommend that gardeners need to change production methods and apply scientific farming measures to cope with difficulties from weather and diseases.

First of all, it is very necessary to choose flower varieties that are resistant to diseases and can withstand adverse weather conditions, especially for Tet flower crops. Disease prevention measures need to be implemented proactively and scientifically, using pesticides properly and combining them with biological products to increase the resistance of plants.

The irrigation system needs to be properly designed to ensure that the soil is not flooded during the rainy season and has enough water during the dry season, helping the flowers grow well.
