The Ministry of Transport has just submitted a document on the "Project to study the possibility of forming Mang Den Airport" to the Prime Minister for consideration and approval.
Adding Mang Den Airport planning to the planning will develop the national airport system for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Regarding Mang Den airport, a representative of the Ministry of Transport said that, in addition to the planned airports, the Prime Minister had previously directed to continue researching, surveying, and evaluating the possibility of planning airports for a number of potential locations and reporting to the Prime Minister for consideration of supplementing the planning when conditions are met.
The representative of the Ministry of Transport also said that Mang Den has great advantages in terms of tourism potential. However, this potential is difficult to effectively promote without good transport infrastructure. Therefore, the development of transport infrastructure, including Mang Den airport here, is extremely necessary.
The proposed airport location is in Mang Den town, Kon Plong district, about 45km northeast of Kon Tum city center.
The planned area for the airport is located entirely on hills and mountains, with an expected area of about 350 hectares; the planned capacity by 2030 is expected to be about 1 million passengers/year.
4C airport level according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization. The preliminary total investment for the construction of Mang Den Airport in the first phase is nearly 5,000 billion VND under the PPP form.
If we compare the capacity of Mang Den airport with the planned number of tourists, it will only meet 40% in 2030 and 20% in 2045.
On November 29, 2023, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1492/QD-TTg approving the Master Plan for the construction of Mang Den Tourist Area, Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province until 2045 (Decision 1492).
According to Decision 1492, the expected tourist scale by 2030 will reach about 2.5 million visitors/year; by 2045 it will reach about 5 million visitors/year.
Thus, if we compare the capacity of Mang Den airport (1 million passengers/year), by 2030, for tourists alone, this airport will only be able to meet 40%, and by 2045, the airport's capacity will only be able to meet 20%.
Decision 1492 also clearly states the orientation for building technical infrastructure framework including Mang Den airport.
Details of Decision 1492 are as follows: The orientation of traffic development is to forecast the demand for passenger and cargo transportation. Develop a transportation strategy to control traffic in tourist areas and urban areas; organize a traffic network including external traffic, urban traffic, and static traffic systems. Connect traffic with dynamic traffic hubs such as the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway and Mang Den airport. Propose a network and support works for the development of environmentally friendly tourism traffic; determine the location, scale, and quantity of traffic hubs.
