On November 17, speaking with reporters, Mr. Ha Trung Thao - Chairman of the People's Committee of Mai Chau commune, Phu Tho province, said that the construction unit is focusing on implementing urgent reinforcement solutions at Thung Khe slope, expected to complete the project in December 2025.
According to Mr. Thao, Thung Khe Pass has complex geology, one side is a steep cliff with many rocks at high altitudes, often with the potential risk of landslides.
In recent years, the phenomenon of rockfall has occurred continuously, especially after storms and floods, seriously threatening traffic safety on National Highway 6 - the main traffic axis connecting the Northwest with the plains.
According to statistics, in the past two years, the section passing Thung Khe slope has had many accidents due to rockfall. Typically, in August 2023, at Km128+740, a landslide suddenly hit a moving car, causing severe damage to the vehicle, fortunately there were no human casualties.
Most recently, in August 2025, at Km121+700, a series of large rocks from the positive slope fell down to block the entire road, causing congestion for many hours.
Faced with the above situation, since June 2025, Road Management Area I (Vietnam Road Administration) has started a surprise repair project at three key locations at risk of rockfall and landslides on National Highway 6 through Mai Chau commune.
The reinforcement points include Km118+660 to Km118+783; Km120+765 to Km120+850; Km127+963 to Km128+219 and Km128+672. The construction project uses a stone nail system from 4.1m to 7.1m deep combined with a high-intensity steel luoi embracing the entire area at risk of insecurity.
Local authorities recommend that people traveling through Thung Khe Pass should observe carefully, follow signs and slow down at construction sections to ensure safety for themselves and their vehicles.
