Trailer truck encroaches on the opposite lane to overtake, forcing the opposite vehicle to stop

Hanoi - After people's reflections, the traffic police force has verified and fined the tractor-trailer driver who "borrowed" the opposite lane to overtake, forcing the opposite vehicle to stop.

On July 29, the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) of the Ministry of Public Security informed that the Traffic Police Department of Hanoi City Police had just verified and handled a tractor-trailer driver for overtaking in violation of regulations. The above behavior was reflected by people through the Zalo phone number of the Director of the Traffic Police Department.

Accordingly, on July 28, Road Traffic Police Team No. 12 - Traffic Police Department of Hanoi City Police worked with T.B. P Trading and Transport Co., Ltd. to verify the driver of a tractor-trailer with license plate 29E-110. xx, pulling a semi-trailer with license plate 29RM-015. xx, who committed traffic violations according to the reflected content.

Through verification, functional forces identified Mr. P.T. N (born 1979, residing in Co Do commune, Hanoi) as the driver of the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The police agency determined that the driver had overtaken when there was a vehicle going in the opposite direction in the section of road intended to overtake, and at the same time there was no overtaking signal. This is a case where overtaking is not allowed according to the provisions of law on road traffic order and safety.

Road Traffic Police Team No. 12 made a record of administrative violation against Mr. P.T. N for the act of driving an overtaking vehicle in cases where overtaking is not allowed, as stipulated in point a, clause 5, Article 6 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP.

For this violation, the driver was fined 5 million VND and had 2 points deducted from his driver's license.

According to the traffic police force, the act of overtaking by encroaching on the opposite lane poses a very high risk of causing traffic accidents, especially for large vehicles such as tractor-trailers. Intentionally overtaking regardless of regulations just to go faster not only threatens the safety of the vehicle operator but also poses danger to vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.

Recently, at a working session between the Traffic Police Department and the Vietnam Road Administration on traffic organization, the Traffic Police Department proposed to change the traffic organization in the direction of no longer allowing vehicles to borrow the opposite lane to overtake vehicles as it is now.

According to the Traffic Police Department, statistics show that the act of overtaking by encroaching on the opposite lane is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents, accounting for an average of about 15% of the total causes of accidents.

Faced with the above situation, the Traffic Police Department proposed that in the new traffic organization plan, it is necessary to re-regulate overtaking, not allowing borrowing the opposite lane to overtake on narrow roads that do not ensure safety, steep mountain passes, winding roads or areas with limited visibility, especially at night.

According to the proposal, overtaking will be carried out by moving to the lane in the same direction or arranging separate overtaking lanes on eligible roads, instead of encroaching on the lane of vehicles going in the opposite direction.
