At the General Surgery Department, Thanh Nhan Hospital, doctors have just received male patient T.S.T (51 years old, Hanoi) in a state of back pain and prolonged painful urination.
The patient said that he had previously been examined and diagnosed with urinary stones. However, instead of treatment as prescribed by the doctor, whenever pain appeared, he used green pineapple juice according to folk experience.
At home, I had many episodes of hip and back pain. Previously, when I went to the doctor, they also diagnosed urinary stones, but every time I had pain, I usually took a green pineapple and squeezed it to drink, and the pain subsided. When the pain became more severe, my family took me to the hospital for examination and treatment and discovered that I had ureteral stones causing kidney dilation grade II–III," the patient shared.

According to MSc.BSCKII Nguyen Van Phuoc, Head of General Surgery Department, Thanh Nhan Hospital, through medical history exploitation, the patient believed that urethral stone only caused pain for a few days and would heal on its own, so treatment was not needed. However, according to the doctor, this is a misconception, the examination and ultrasound results showed that patient T had urethral stone causing kidney dilation grade II–III.
Doctors said that prolonged obstruction not only reduces kidney function but also causes polyps to appear around the stones, increasing the risk of ureteral stenosis later, making the treatment process more difficult and complex.
When the stones exist for a long time without treatment, the blocked urine flow will cause the kidneys to dilate more and more, impairing kidney function. If treatment is continued to be delayed, patients are at risk of facing serious complications, even long-term effects on kidney function.
According to Dr. Phuoc, urinary stones include many types such as calcium stones, urate stones, cystin stones and struvite stones. Each type has its own characteristics and treatment direction. Therefore, arbitrarily using folk remedies or folk remedies when not accurately identifying the type of stones, location and degree of blockage is not only ineffective but can also cause stones to grow larger, increasing the risk of urinary tract infection.
Doctors also recommend that when symptoms such as back pain, painful urination, bloody urine or abnormal urination appear, people need to go to a medical facility for examination and early treatment. Timely intervention not only helps remove stones effectively but also preserves kidney function, reducing the risk of long-term complications.
