motivation for union members to "set up a business"
On International Women's Day 8.3 this year, for Ms. Hoa Thi Khoa, a union of Thuong Lam Primary School, Lam Binh District (Tuyen Quang), the joy seems to be more complete as this is the first year the whole family can live in a new, spacious and cozy house.
She is a union member with particularly difficult housing circumstances while her and her husband's income is just enough to cover their living expenses. For more than 20 years, the family of 4 has had to accept living in a dilapidated house because they did not have enough money to build it. "Life is difficult, I dare not think about building a new house, but recently, with the encouragement, care and support of the Trade Union organization with the amount of 40 million VND, my husband and I decided to borrow more to build a "Union Shelter", with an area of nearly 70m2. The help of the union is the main motivation for me to rise up" - Ms. Khoa shared.
Like Ms. Khoa, for many years her family of Ms. Bui Thi Van, a worker at Tuyen Quang Urban Management, Environment and Service Joint Stock Company, Son Duong District branch, has lived in a seriously degraded house that is unsafe during the rainy and stormy season.
Ms. Van confided: "Due to economic difficulties and lack of construction conditions, the whole family has been living in a dilapidated house for nearly 20 years. Recently, with the support of trade unions at all levels, the family's new house has gradually been completed."
Ms. Van's current house started construction in September 2024, with a total area of 100m2, a type of level 4 house with a corrugated iron roof, with a total value of nearly 300 million VND, of which the "Union Shelter" Fund supported 40 million VND, the rest was borrowed by the family...
The program to support the construction of "Union Shelter" houses in Tuyen Quang province has contributed positively to eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses and realizing the dream of settling down for workers in difficult circumstances.
Trade unions join hands to support people in difficult circumstances
In 2024, the Tuyen Quang Provincial Federation of Labor supported the construction and repair of 41 houses for union members in difficult circumstances, with a total cost of nearly 1.6 billion VND. At the same time, implementing the Project to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Tuyen Quang province, trade unions at all levels have called for and mobilized agencies, units, and enterprises in the spirit of voluntariness and contributing to support the program.
Typically, the Chiem Hoa District Labor Federation has supported 12 poor households with difficult housing circumstances with a total budget of 570 million VND. This funding source is taken from the New Rural Fund, mobilizing contributions from cadres, union members, workers and civil servants in the district. This is a practical activity of trade unions at all levels to care for people in difficult circumstances and effectively implement the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses.
Ms. Chau Thi Thu - Vice President of the Tuyen Quang Provincial Labor Federation - said that in the past, the Standing Committee of the Provincial Labor Federation has directed trade unions at all levels to organize propaganda and mobilize the construction of the "Union Shelter" Fund. Trade unions at all levels also regularly survey and grasp the living conditions and housing status of union members, workers, civil servants and laborers to promptly support the construction and repair of houses for those in difficult circumstances.
The Provincial Federation of Labor has directed trade unions at all levels to mobilize union members, workers, civil servants, agencies, units, and enterprises to support the Union Shelter Fund, and at the same time instructed trade unions at all levels to select suitable and appropriate support subjects for the right subjects. The concern and support of trade unions at all levels not only helps union members have stable housing but also demonstrates the spirit of solidarity and mutual love in the working community, contributing to building an increasingly strong trade union organization" - Ms. Thu said.
