The US technology giant plans to launch a new software development toolkit (SDK) in iOS 19 to simplify the addition of AI features to third-party applications.
This SDK will provide major language models (LLM) similar to what Apple is using for the Apple Apple Intelligence feature series, including notification summary, smart writing tool, Genmoji, and Image Playground. However, Apple will prioritize small models that can process directly on the device.
Apple has been criticized for its slow implementation of new Siri features integrated with AI. Despite announcing the personalized Siri experience at WWDC 2024 and expected to launch with iOS 18, Apple has not been able to complete it and has had to move to iOS 19.
Some other features such as Writing Tools and Image Playground have not yet attracted widespread users.
According to Bloomberg, Apple expects opening access to AI models to developers to create more practical use situations, thereby increasing the appeal to consumers.
Currently, developers can integrate features such as notification summary, Genmoji, and Image Playground into the application, but cannot build their own AI function based on Apple's platform. Therefore, many applications have to use third-party AI models - something Apple wants to change.
Official announcements related to AI will be introduced by Apple at the WWDC conference, taking place on June 9.
In addition, Apple is quietly developing large internal language models. It is expected that the all-new Siri version using LLM with dialogue capabilities similar to ChatGPT or Claude will be released as early as 2026, along with iOS 20.
