Google has upgraded the Gmail user experience on iOS and Android for Google Workspace accounts, with an automatic summary display for long email streams.
Previously, users had to click on the "Summary of this email" option to view the main content. Now, the summarization will appear at the top of the email every time you open the letter chain.
This feature is powered by Google's AI assistant, which automatically summarizes and updates the main points from multiple messages in the chain. However, currently only support email written in English and requires activating personalized smart features in Gmail, Chat, Meet as well as Google Workspace.
Google has not announced whether it will expand the automatic summarization feature for Gmail on computers or accounts outside Workspace.
In case it is not supported, users can still select Summary this email manually as before.
In addition to summarization, Gemini in Gmail also helps compose new emails and search for information from inboxes or Google Drive. At the I/O 2025 event, CEO Sundar Pichai also introduced personalized Smart replies an upcoming feature that can learn from previous writing styles and content to create appropriate, accurate feedback to users.
