Google has just announced a new update for the Gemini artificial intelligence ecosystem on Android, adding the ability to automate multi-step tasks.
This is an important step forward in making AI a true digital assistant for smartphone users.
The new feature is currently in the beta testing phase, allowing users to request Gemini to perform tasks such as booking technology cars or ordering food delivered to their homes.
Instead of having to open each application, enter information and confirm orders, users only need to make requests in natural language, AI will automatically complete the necessary steps.
The core idea is to reduce manual operations and limit switching between multiple applications, which is one of the biggest inconveniences when using smartphones today.
However, the initial scope of support is still limited, mainly focusing on applications in the fields of food, grocery shopping and ride-hailing.
Automation features are currently only available on certain devices, including Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S26 series. The initial deployment markets are the US and South Korea, before expanding to other regions.
Because actions controlled by AI can generate errors or risks, Google said they have integrated many layers of protection. The automation process only begins when the phone owner issues a clear command.
While the task is running, users can track the progress in real time and stop immediately if they detect anything unusual.
In addition, the entire process takes place in a secure virtual environment on the device, where Gemini is only allowed to access the allowed applications, instead of all phone data.
These measures aim to reduce concerns about privacy and security, which are key factors when AI begins to perform actions instead of humans.
Google's move shows the general trend in the technology industry, when companies are looking for ways to turn AI into a tool to perform work instead of just answering questions.
Platforms like OpenAI with ChatGPT products have also provided scheduling and automation capabilities for some tasks.
Along with automation, Google also expanded the feature to detect call scams.
This tool is now available on the Galaxy S26 series in the US. The fraudulent message detection feature, running directly on the device thanks to the Gemini model, is also being expanded to more areas and devices, including the Pixel 10 series.
Another notable upgrade is the Circle to Search feature. Previously, this tool mainly recognized an object on the screen. With the new update, AI can analyze the entire displayed content.
Users can circle or draw on multiple objects in the same image, such as clothes, accessories, and receive separate search results for each item.
This significantly expands the ability to shop and look up visually on the phone.
Google continuously updates Gemini on Android in the context of increasingly fierce AI competition, especially when Apple is also developing a new generation of Siri assistants expected to be launched later this year.
With AI increasingly capable of operating instead of humans, smartphones may be entering a new phase, where users not only interact with applications, but also assign work directly to artificial intelligence.
