According to Huawei Central, after many years of dependence on Android code, Huawei launched HarmonyOS NEXT in 2024. This revolutionary version of the HarmonyOS operating system not only does not use American technology but is also considered smarter, faster, smoother, more efficient, as well as safer than other operating systems.
According to market research firm Canalys, HarmonyOS has expanded its market share in the Chinese smartphone market by 19%, slightly better than iOS and only behind Android (64%). This is an important step forward to make Huawei more confident with future steps.
Huawei's consumer sales president Richard Yu said the company is currently targeting at least a third of the global smartphone operating system market with the HarmonyOS operating system.
According to Mr. Yu, Huawei invests about 10,000 personnel per year in the operating system development process and this process has been going on for 6 years. Compared to other brands, Huawei's users are quite loyal and always support their new products, even during ups and downs.
In just a few months, HarmonyOS NEXT has reached the 10 million mark in the Chinese consumer market, thanks to AI (artificial intelligence) capabilities, smarter tools and useful features.
Currently, Huawei aims to reach "tens of millions of users" faster than ever. The Chinese tech giant has begun preparing for its next software release, HarmonyOS 6.0.
A new software version will likely launch alongside the Huawei Mate 80 series in late October or early November 2025. Many sources believe that this build will unlock more surprising features and capabilities for users about AI and privacy/security.
The user interface (UI) could be another highlight that attracts users' attention in HarmonyOS 6.0. Other changes are not yet clear. The detailed information will be revealed by Huawei in the near future.
