LG unexpectedly launches the first stretchable screen

LG has unveiled the world's first stretchable display, which can expand in size from 12 inches to up to 18 inches thanks to micro-LED technology and flexible plastic materials.

Recently, LG has demonstrated a stretchable display that can increase the surface area by up to 50%. What is special is that this display does not use OLED technology but applies micro-LED, ensuring high durability with the ability to withstand more than 10,000 stretches.

In particular, the screen can maintain 100ppi image quality even in extreme temperature conditions or when subjected to strong impacts. With the ability to stretch and bend, LG has collaborated with fashion designers to create clothes with the display, allowing users to wear it every day without worrying about damage.

LG is also considering potential applications such as in-car displays with virtual buttons that can be pressed directly, or firefighter uniforms that display real-time information.

Funded by the South Korean government, the goal of the project was to create a display that could stretch at least 20%. LG exceeded this goal by producing a display that could stretch by 50%, a major breakthrough for the display industry.

Samsung is also a member of the stretchable display alliance and is working on sports wearables with stretchable displays. While it remains to be seen whether these prototypes will soon become commercial products, they will certainly usher in a new trend, bringing a more flexible and intuitive user experience.
