This feature promises to bring a more seamless login experience, when users can authenticate their identities using the security method available on the smartphone such as pin code, fingerprint or facial recognition.
Not only convenient, passkey is also considered safer than traditional passwords. This method is capable of resisting many forms of cyber attacks, because it cannot be predicted or stolen easily like passwords. However, the level of security will still depend on the type of passkey used. For example, a 4-digit PIN will be less secure than fingerprint scanning or facial recognition.
Meta said the passkey feature will be rolled out soon to the Facebook app on iOS and Android. Meanwhile, Messenger users will have to wait a few more months. However, a single passkey can be shared between both Facebook and Messenger.
Compared to its competitors, Facebook is considered slow to apply this modern login method. Google has supported passkey for many years, X (formerly Twitter) has also joined since last year. Microsoft, Amazon, and many other platforms have used passkey.
