At the India AI Impact Expo 2026 conference held from February 16-20 in New Delhi (India), OpenAI announced the "OpenAI for India" initiative, marking an important step in the expansion strategy in India, one of the fastest growing artificial intelligence markets in the world.
According to the company, this South Asian country currently has more than 100 million users of ChatGPT per week, showing the strong popularity of AI technology in life and businesses.
The launch of the new program is expected to help OpenAI better exploit the socio-economic potential of AI in the world's most populous market.
One of the major focuses of the initiative is the development of technology infrastructure. Within the framework of the global Stargate program, OpenAI cooperates with Tata Corporation (the largest multi-industry corporation in India) to build data centers ready for AI right in India.
The main technology partner is Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), where OpenAI will become the first customer of the new data center service called HyperVault.
The project is expected to start with a capacity of 100 megawatts and may expand to 1 gigawatt in the future.
When advanced AI systems are operated domestically, the processing speed will be significantly faster, while helping businesses and government agencies meet data compliance and security requirements.
Not only stopping at infrastructure, cooperation between the two sides also expands to business applications. Tata plans to deploy the ChatGPT Enterprise platform throughout the member company ecosystem in the coming years, starting from TCS.
If completed, this could become one of the largest enterprise AI deployment programs in the world.
Along with that, TCS plans to use AI Codex programming tools to standardize the software development process between engineering groups.
In addition to Tata, OpenAI is also cooperating with many Indian businesses in the fields of finance, tourism and digital services.
Education and skills development are another important pillar. OpenAI said it will expand AI certification programs in India, with TCS becoming the first organization outside the United States to participate. These certifications aim to provide practical AI skills for workers in many industries.
In addition, the company has cooperated with leading educational institutions to provide more than 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses, helping students access AI tools right from the training stage.
To support rapidly expanding operations, OpenAI plans to open more offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, in addition to existing facilities in New Delhi.
This move shows that India is becoming a strategic center in OpenAI's global ambitions, not only in terms of users but also in terms of AI infrastructure and human resources.
