The importance of identifying, authenticating, and tracing national origin
Sharing at the workshop "Original traceability authentication - Sustainable development driving force of Vietnam's digital economy", held on the morning of July 8 in Hanoi, organized by the National Data Association, Ministry of Public Security, Mr. Nguyen Huy - Head of the Technology Department of the National Data Association raised the issue of counterfeit goods of unknown origin.
According to statistics, annual losses due to the problem of counterfeit goods of unknown origin amount to over 500 billion USD. In Vietnam, in the first 5 months of 2025, there were more than 34,000 cases of smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods.
In addition to economic losses, this problem also affects health. In Vietnam, a series of scandals about health, food, medicine... have occurred in recent times.
In Vietnam, there are many platforms for product management and traceability, but they are not thorough, and there are many backlogs. On the part of the authorities, the data was fragmented, lacking a real-time monitoring system and automatic processing. For consumers, they lack a tool to trace the origin guaranteed by the State...
Regarding the solution, Mr. Nguyen Huy emphasized the importance of having a platform for identification, authentication and traceability of national origin. This platform will belong to the National Data Center, integrating with other platforms.

Each product will have a unique identification code, just by checking, users can clearly identify businesses and products; authenticate goods information and supply chains; trace product life cycles and origins...
An inevitable trend
Authentication of traceability is an inevitable trend in the digital economy and an important driving force for sustainable national economic development. By combining technology and synchronous solutions, Vietnam can make the most of the potential of traceability to build a transparent, efficient, and competitive digital economy.
As a spoke at the Workshop, Mr. Bui Ba Chinh, Acting Director of the National Code and Line Center (National Committee for Standards, Metrology and Quality) said that from the reality of recent serious cases of counterfeit goods production and trading, it is time not to ignore but to tighten technology management to avoid similar risks.
In addition, according to him, the context of promoting digital transformation from Resolution No. 57 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation has set the problem of digital transformation for commodity products.
The Resolution mentioned promoting the consumption of products and services in the digital environment, ensuring the digital economy of industries and fields, and having policies to encourage businesses to invest in digital transformation...
Implementing digital transformation is to put on new, more modern, more connetable and importantly, easy-to-verify products, creating trust for consumers.
Mr. Nguyen Huy - Head of the Technology Department, National Data Association emphasized: "In the context of the whole country implementing digital transformation and digitalization of the economy, the application of technology for traceability is mandatory and must be a comprehensive policy from top to bottom, with synchronous management from the central to local levels and applied to all businesses, only then can the origin of goods be identified, authenticated and traced".
