Things to note when having the habit of eating sweet breakfast

Your breakfast habits can affect your energy levels and long-term health.

A sweet breakfast can have a significant impact on your energy levels, says Kanikka Malhotra, a nutrition consultant and diabetes educator in India.

“Choosing sugary foods may give you an immediate energy boost, but this energy level often crashes quickly, leaving you feeling tired and craving more food,” says Malhotra.

This is why a breakfast rich in complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats is often recommended. These nutrients help stabilize blood sugar levels, minimize energy fluctuations, and keep you alert and focused throughout the morning.

Health risks of eating sweets for breakfast

According to nutritionist Malhotra, regular consumption of sugary foods in the morning can lead to a number of health problems, including:

Weight gain: High sugar intake contributes to obesity.

Type 2 diabetes: Consistently high blood sugar levels can increase your risk of developing diabetes.

Heart Disease: Sugar consumption can lead to high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease.

Dental problems: Sugary foods are a major cause of tooth decay.

However, Ms. Malhotra also noted that sweet foods with high nutritional value are a better choice than regular sugary foods.

If a sweet breakfast contains essential nutrients like protein, fiber and healthy fats, it can still be part of a balanced diet.

For example, smoothies made with fruit, homemade dahi, and almonds are both sweet and packed with valuable nutrients, explains nutritionist Malhotra.

Note

While sugary cereals and pastries can spike blood sugar and lead to nutrient depletion, sweet breakfasts that combine whole grains, fruit, and protein are healthier alternatives. Pairing sweet treats with fiber and protein can also provide sustained energy.

However, it is important to be mindful of portion sizes and total sugar intake. While healthier alternatives are beneficial, consuming too much can still lead to weight gain and other health problems. Remember, moderation is key and a balanced diet is essential for overall health.
