The Department of Education and Training (DET) of Ho Chi Minh City has announced additional enrollment targets at 37 public high schools in Area 1 for the 2025-2026 school year.
According to Lao Dong, among the 37 schools lacking quotas, not only schools in suburban areas have low admission scores, but also top schools with high admission scores such as: Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School lacks 68 quotas, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School lacks 80 quotas, Phu Nhuan High School lacks 20 quotas, Le Quy Don High School lacks 15 quotas, ... These are all in the group of 10 schools with the highest admission scores this year.
This is not the first time that a group of top schools have not recruited enough students.
In 2024, after finishing the school year, the city also recorded that 36 high schools had to announce additional admissions with a total of more than 2,000 students.
Among them, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School lacks 40 targets - the school with the highest benchmark score last year.
In addition, there are also high schools such as: Phu Nhuan lacks 12 targets, Le Quy Don lacks 15 targets,...
In 2023, nearly 100% of public high schools were recorded to lack targets. This is also the first year that Ho Chi Minh City has applied the additional admission form.
That year, in the top group of schools, Gia Dinh High School lacked the most with 97 quotas, followed by Nguyen Thuong Hien High School with 63 quotas, Tran Phu High School with 50 quotas, Nguyen Huu Huan High School with 46 quotas, Mac Dinh Chi High School with 35 quotas, ... and the school with the least lack, Bui Thi Xuan High School with 14 quotas.
At the end of the time to receive additional applications in 2023, Ho Chi Minh City recruited more than 1,000 students, lacking more than 2,800 targets.
Notably, the above top schools are still almost left empty-handed in the additional admission round.
Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi - Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School said that it is understandable that top schools lack quotas and cannot recruit additional students.
"Among the admitted students, many students choose to study abroad but still register to join the school. In addition, students who have studied at private schools and have boarding, when admitted know that the school does not have a boarding school, so they do not enroll, and choose to continue studying at private schools," said Mr. Nghi.
As for additional admissions but no students submit documents, he explained that because the admission score is too high, the remaining students (not admitted) are not eligible for admission to the school.
