Expanding the renewable energy sector, helping electric vehicles "green from start to finish"
Experts calculate that if each car and motorbike traveling on the road is likened to a mobile emission station, Vietnam currently has nearly 80.6 million such emission stations, according to the number of registered vehicles as of the end of 2023. Of which, there are more than 6.3 million cars and 74.3 million motorbikes. Cars and motorbikes using these fossil materials are not only the main cause of air pollution, but also directly affect people's health.
Meanwhile, electric vehicles operate smoothly, without causing noise and without fuel odor, especially suitable for densely populated urban areas and families with young children. Using electric vehicles will significantly reduce the environmental impact.
At the 2025 General Meeting of Shareholders of Vingroup Corporation recently, Chairman of the Board of Directors Pham Nhat Vuong said that the group is expanding many other pillars, including the green energy segment to help electric vehicles "green from start to finish".
According to the assessment, whether electric vehicles are truly "green" or not depends largely on the energy source used to charge the battery. When charged from renewable energy sources such as wind power and solar power, electric vehicles will have the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly compared to when using electricity from fossil fuels. This is also a trend in the world when renewable energy is increasingly accounting for a large proportion.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global renewable energy will reach 510 gigawatt in 2023 and is expected to account for 42 percent of electricity production in 2028.
In Vietnam, the VIII Power Plan sets a target of increasing renewable energy capacity by 71.5% by 2050, affirming a strong commitment to reducing emissions and protecting the environment. With the rapid development of wind and solar power projects, electric vehicles will have the opportunity to access cleaner energy sources and optimize emission reduction potential.
Electric vehicles in Vietnam aim for the goal of being truly "clean"
For electric vehicles to be truly "clean", increasing investment in renewable energy is an important and inevitable step. The Vietnamese government has set out strong support policies for the development of electric vehicles and clean energy. The goal is to reduce net emissions to zero by 2050.
The strong participation of businesses in the electric vehicle market along with the Government's incentive policies will be an important driving force to help electric vehicles become the main means of transportation.
Mr. Hoang Duong Tung - Chairman of the Vietnam Clean Air Network - assessed that currently, Hanoi as well as many cities in Vietnam are seriously polluted. One of the main causes of air pollution is from personal vehicles.
There are many motorbikes and cars running on fossil fuels. There are no regulations on emission control for motorbikes, and they can emitt as much black smoke as they want.
The use of electric vehicles such as motorbikes, cars, and buses by VinFast and many other businesses is a great effort to reduce pollution. Along with that, it will expand the public transport system, plant trees, and elevated railway lines...
According to Mr. Tung, switching to electric vehicles, not using fossil fuels is an inevitable path, cannot be delayed, because if there is no action, the pollution will get worse.
