World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices fell sharply. At the end of the weekend trading session, WTI oil price was at 83.85 USD/barrel, down 10.84 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 11.45%. WTI oil closed the previous trading session at 94.69 USD/barrel and opened the weekend session at 93.22 USD/barrel.
Brent oil price was at 90.83 USD/barrel, down 9.01 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 9.07%. Brent oil price closed the previous trading session at 99.39 USD/barrel and opened the weekend session at 98.45 USD/barrel.
This is the strongest decrease of both of these items in the past 10 days.
According to analysts, Iran's permission for commercial ships to circulate again through the Strait of Hormuz during the remainder of the ceasefire agreement has quickly eased concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies.
The move to reopen this vital shipping route is seen as a key factor in helping the market eliminate the "risk premium" accumulated during the escalating tensions, bringing oil prices back to reflect real supply and demand instead of being dominated by geopolitical factors.
Ships can now pass through the Strait of Hormuz, but need to coordinate with Iranian authorities. Tracking data shows that about 20 ships have left the Persian Gulf, showing that transportation is gradually being restored.
In related developments, the US and Iran have made some progress in building a memorandum of understanding to end the conflict. Information about the possibility of resuming negotiations later this week, along with a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, is strengthening expectations that Middle East tensions may cool down.
However, analysts warn that risks have not disappeared. The time for oil transportation from the Persian Gulf to Europe could last about three weeks, making supply unable to improve immediately. At the same time, the risk of disruption may recur if disagreements related to Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions are not thoroughly resolved.
