First forecast of flood situation in the Mekong Delta in 2025

Huy Hoàng |

According to the forecast, the flood peak in the Mekong Delta is likely to appear in early October 2025.

According to information from the Department of Irrigation Works Management and Construction (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), in the past week, saline intrusion on the Mekong River mouths tended to increase slightly with the tide. The salinity level of 4g/l on the Mekong River mouths is from 26-38km, from 40-42km on the Vam Co River.

It is forecasted that in the next week, saline intrusion tends to decrease on river estuaries. The largest salty boundary of 4 g/l is from 27-33 km on the Mekong River estuaries, from 35-40 km on Vam Co River and from 35-40 km on Cai Lon River. According to the report of the Southern Institute of Irrigation Science, saline intrusion in the Mekong Did has passed the top and gradually decreased towards the seaport, less likely to affect the water of irrigation works.

Regarding the longer forecast, in the Mekong River mouths in May, saline intrusion tends to decrease compared to April, the salinity level of 4g/l is likely to penetrate by 30-40km. Saltwater intrusion only affects the drainage of irrigation works 25-35 km from the sea during high tides.

In the Vam Co River, the largest salinity level of 4g/l is forecasted on the East and West Vam Co rivers at 45-50 km, 65 80 km lower than in 2024, 55-85 km lower than in 2020, 67-80 km lower than in 2016. Saltwater intrusion only affects the ability of irrigation works to collect water 45-50km or less from the sea during high tides.

On the Cai Lon River, the Cai Lon - Cai Be culvert is currently put into operation, so salinity intrusion is controlled.

In addition, the Department also issued the first forecasts on the flood situation in the Mekong Delta in 2025. Accordingly, the flood in 2025 is likely to have small floods, the flood peak is forecast to appear in early October 2025, at a level lower or at alert level 1.
