Sneaking garbage into the river
According to local residents, recently, there have been cases of vegetable and fruit farms near Cai Rang Floating Market (Cai Rang District, Can Tho City) putting agricultural waste in bags and then secretly dumping it directly into the river at night, causing pollution and ruining the beauty of the floating market area. Therefore, local residents hope that the authorities will arrange a place for business owners to collect and transport trash, avoiding cases of dumping it directly into the river, causing pollution.
In response to the above reflection, on the afternoon of November 22, a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper had an interview with Mr. Tieu Chi Nguyen - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Le Binh Ward, Cai Rang District. Mr. Nguyen said that recently, the People's Committee of Le Binh Ward invited households living on rafts and vegetable farms along the Can Tho River embankment to meet at the Yen Thuan Information House to propagate and sign a commitment to put garbage in the right place and protect the surrounding environment.
As a result, most households agreed to work together to protect the environment and proposed appropriate collection times. At the same time, some households proposed to install public toilets (with fees) to serve tourists visiting the floating market and surrounding residents.
In the coming time, the locality will mobilize and invite households trading in agricultural products to sign contracts with garbage collection units for closer monitoring.
Plan to install 30 surveillance cameras
Mr. Nguyen added that in the future, the People's Committee of Le Binh Ward plans to install surveillance cameras along the embankment to monitor and handle repeat offenders.
The locality has coordinated with units to survey locations to implement the policy of socializing the construction of equipment installation pillars to provide free internet coverage, 4G/5G equipment, security cameras, and lighting at Cai Rang Floating Market.
As for security cameras, it is expected that a total of 30 cameras will be installed in the area. Of which, 10 cameras will be installed at the floating market wharf; the remaining locations at Cai Rang bridge, Yen Thuan welcome gate, Yen Ha welcome gate, Thanh My welcome gate, Le Binh bridge, etc. will have 2 cameras each.
According to Mr. Nguyen, the problem of garbage in the river does not only come from local people or tourists, but more importantly, it is due to the tide, which is very difficult to control.
As soon as they heard that the locality would install surveillance cameras, many people expressed their support and thought that this was a feasible solution to solve this situation.
Mr. Hoang Ninh (a resident of Le Binh ward) excitedly said: “Installing surveillance cameras is a good solution to prevent people from littering. I really hope Cai Rang Floating Market will be green, clean and beautiful, because every day this place welcomes a lot of tourists to visit.”
Cai Rang floating market not only serves the trading of goods but is also a "golden" tourist destination attracting visitors to Can Tho City. In recent times, the authorities have stepped up propaganda and implemented many solutions, mobilizing people to protect the environment, ensure safety of waterway traffic, improve service quality... to better serve visitors to the floating market.
