In the face of rising floodwaters in the northern provinces, causing great damage to people and property, Mr. Le Ngoc Quyen, Deputy Director of the Northern Hydrometeorological Station, Department of Hydrometeorology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment - has given the latest assessment of flooding and forecast of when the water will recede in the North.

Sir, can you tell us more about the flood situation of rivers in the Northern region at this time?

- In the past 24 hours, the rivers of Gam, Giang, Cau, Thuong, Trung, Bac Giang in Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Bac Ninh provinces have risen in water levels, with peak flood water levels at many stations exceeding level 3.

In particular, the peak flood level at Gia Bay station (Cau river) is 29.9m above level 3, above level 3 is 1.09m; Huu Lung station (Trung river) is 24.31m, above level 3 is 5.31m, above the historical flood is 1.77m; Cau Son station (Thuong river) is 17.97m, above level 3 is 1.97m, above the historical level of 0.36m.

Currently, the water level of the rivers is decreasing. In particular, rivers in Bac Ninh are rising, the Trung River (Lang Son) is rising slowly.

In the following hours, what is the forecast for the Northern rivers, sir?

- Currently, the water level of the rivers continues to decrease. In particular, rivers in Bac Ninh are rising and are likely to peak tonight (October 8) to tomorrow morning (October 9), the flood peak on Cau River will exceed BD3 by about 1m, Thuong River will exceed alert level 3 by 1.5 - 2m and exceed history by 0.3 - 0.5m. The Trung River (Lang Son) continues to rise slowly and is likely to peak this evening.

Flooding was widespread for 2-3 days, some places had longer in many areas of communes and wards such as Yen Binh, Van Nham, Huu Lung, Tuan Son, Cai Kinh, etc.
