Is it normal to gain weight overnight?
Unexpected weight gain overnight is not uncommon. Usually, we will see a weight range of 1-2 kg while trying to lose weight, says Dr Aparna Govil Bhasker, endoscopologist and bariatric surgeon at Saifee Hospital, Mumbai, India. This can be completely resolved if you understand the causes and take improvement measures."
Reasons why you gain weight overnight
Sudden diet
When you switch from a low-calorie or low-carb diet to a diet with higher calories and moderate carbohydrates, your body will store water with carbohydrates, leading to a temporary weight gain of about 1-2 kg.
Stress
Stress can cause the body to produce the hormone cortisol, a factor that contributes to water retention. When stress is prolonged, the body will start to accumulate water, leading to water-based weight gain. Stress is a major cause of water retention, and it can cause overnight weight gain, explains Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker.
Lack of sleep
Lack of sleep not only affects your mood but also increases cravings and makes you snack easily. This can disrupt your metabolism and lead to weight gain. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night will help control weight effectively.
High sodium intake
When you consume too much salt or sodium-containing foods, your body will retain water to maintain balance. This leads to temporary weight gain, especially when you check your weight the next morning.
Drinking alcohol
Alcohol, especially when combined with sugary drinks, can dehydrate the body and force you to retain water. This can cause bloating and overnight weight gain.
High-intensity exercise
When you do high-intensity exercises, your body will be stressed, damaging muscle fibers. This leads to inflammation and water retention, causing you to feel a change in your weight in the first days after exercising.
Eating time
If you eat dinner late or check your weight at an unsuitable time, you may notice fluctuations in your weight. In fact, the body is still digesting food, and the weight can vary depending on when you measure it.
