Frequently reading negative news before bed can affect the thyroid gland

The habit of using the phone and reading negative news before bed not only reduces sleep quality but can also affect thyroid activity.

Thyroid is sensitive to the body's biological clock

Many women have a habit of lying in bed surfing the phone, reading news or following social networks before going to bed. However, experts warn that exposure to screens at night can negatively affect the endocrine system, including the thyroid gland.

According to Dr. Kalyan Kumar Gangopadhyay - endocrinologist in Kolkata (India) - the hypothalamic axis - thyroid - is a thyroid hormone production regulating system and is particularly sensitive to circadian rhythm. When sleep time is shortened or sleep is frequently interrupted, the thyroid hormone regulation process may be affected.

He said that more and more patients do not have clear risk factors but experience increased thyroid hormones exceeding normal levels. Through medical history exploitation, doctors found a common point is the habit of staying up late and using electronic devices for a long time.

Blue light and negative news make sleep poor

Blue light emitted from phones, tablets and laptops has the ability to inhibit melatonin production - a hormone that plays a role in regulating the sleep and wake cycle. When melatonin is reduced, the body finds it harder to fall asleep, and the necessary rest time for the endocrine recovery process is also shortened.

Not only screen light, continuously receiving negative information also causes the brain to maintain a state of stress, increasing alertness at times when the body needs rest. This contributes to disrupting the biological clock and affecting the activity of the thyroid gland.

Professor Russell Foster - a circadian rhythm expert at the University of Oxford (USA) - said that artificial light at night can disrupt important biological signals that control sleep and many endocrine functions. According to him, maintaining a dark environment and limiting the use of electronic devices before bedtime is one of the simple but effective measures to protect long-term health.

Experts recommend that women should stop using electronic devices at least 30-60 minutes before bed, limit reading stressful news in the evening, and maintain a stable sleep schedule every day. These small changes can contribute to protecting sleep, balancing hormones, and supporting the healthy functioning of the thyroid gland.
