The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that at 8 am on February 2, low pressure 02a was being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
The center of the low pressure is located at about 9.0 degrees north latitude, 141.4 degrees east longitude, 1,660km northeast of Mindanao. The low pressure is unlikely to develop into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.
Previously, on February 1, PAGASA warned that the Philippines may face its 2nd storm this year, with potential low pressure forming in PAR on February 3, with a moderate possibility of developing into a tropical storm.
If it strengthens, the storm will be named locally Typhoon Basyang.
PAGASA said the earliest impact could occur on February 4, causing rain in some areas of the country.
Typhoon forecasts for February show that the Philippines may only have from 0 to 1 tropical storm in the month. Any storm is likely to move in arcs far from the mainland, although storm systems may still pass near the Visayas or part of Mindanao.
PAGASA said that the northeast monsoon continues to affect most of the country, causing temperatures to drop, especially in the mountainous areas of Luzon, where the minimum temperature can drop to 10-12 degrees Celsius.
Some areas in southern Luzon and Visayas are also experiencing heavy rain due to landslides, leading to warnings of possible floods and landslides.
PAGASA calls on people in affected areas to be vigilant, as weather conditions may still change in the coming days.
